Thought Of The Day
Eleusis Nomic is officially closed due to lack of interest. The idea was interesting, the problem being that due to such a vast array of possible Secret Rules, it became difficult to get any proposals passed. The following is the complete listing of the rules, proposals, and point/player logs. -- Joe Java (Scorekeeper)

Initial Rules

[Intro] [Initial / Final] [Proposals] [Player Info] [Secret Rule]

Game Meta Rules
  1. Each game will have a Scorekeeper whos duty is to maintain the web pages, and update the proposals, rules, and other relavant game state in a timely fashion. The scorekeeper for this game is Joel Ricker (joejava@dragoncat.net), but should be referred to as Joe Java.
  2. A new player may join the game at any time by informing the Scorekeeper via email of their desire to do so.
  3. Each round has a God who creates one secret rule at the beginning of the round.
  4. The winner of the previous round is God for the next round.
  5. The God may not change during the round.
  6. The winner of the game is the player with the highest score at the end of all rounds.
  7. Each round consists of turns. During each turn, each player may submit one proposal (or series of proposals)
  8. A player submits a proposal (or series of proposals) by sending them via email to the Scorekeeper.
  9. No rule may be created which makes further play impossible.
  10. No proposed rule may alter, repeal or create any Meta rule (except as specified in the Eleusis Meta Rule 11), but may impose further restrictions. For example, a proposal to change the number of points required to end the round to -20 would be rejected, but imposing the creation of a gameboard and a specific room which must be occupied while having 0 points would be legal (assuming it was legal by all other rules).
  11. To preserve the Scorekeeper's sanity, all proposals for a turn must be submitted before 5 PM PST on the day the turn ends, the prophet's predictions must be submitted before 5 PM PST on the following day, and God's acceptance or rejection must be submitted by 5 PM PST on the second day following.

Eleusis Meta Rules
  1. All players begin the game with a score of 0. A new player upon joining the game will start with a score of 0.
  2. Each player begins the Round with 14 points.
  3. The round ends when one (or more) players reach 0 points during a turn.
  4. Upon the end of a round, all Game Rules and the current Secret Rule are repealed, leaving a pristine slate of only the Meta Rules for the next round. Any game attributes not described by the Meta Rules are removed as well.
  5. A proposal will be accepted if it meets the following criteria and rejected otherwise:
    1. The proposal is legal according to the rules in existance at that time.
    2. The proposal does not create a rule which duplicates (in the judgement of the God for the Round) any existing rule.

  6. When a player has a proposal accepted, that player recieves -1 point.
  7. When a player has a proposal rejected, that player recieves 2 points.
  8. A player may submit up to four proposals simultaneously, however, if any proposal in the series is rejected, all proposals in the series are rejected, with the appropriate consequences.
  9. When a round ends, score is tallied as follows:
    a) Each player recieves the difference between their point total and the highest point total of all players for that round in score points.
    b) Each player with 0 points recieves 4 extra score points.
    c) If there was a prophet when the round ended, the prophet recieves 1 extra score point for each accepted proposal and 2 extra score points for each rejected proposal during his term as prophet.
    d) God recieves the smaller of the best players score or 2 times the number of proposals submitted after the creation of the current prophet.
  10. When a player submits a proposal that is accepted, that player may declare themself to the prophet with the following restrictions:
    a) A player may not become prophet if there is a current prophet.
    b) A player must declare his prophet status at the time he submits his proposal (IE: he must demonstrate he has a rudimentary idea of the contents of the secret rule)
  11. When a player is prophet, he no longer gains or loses points for each proposal and may not submit proposals. Instead he predicts whether or not God will accept or reject each proposal. If the prophet predicts incorrectly, the prophet is overthrown and recieves a 5 point penalty and becomes a player again. The proposal (or series of proposals) which was predicted incorrectly is scored for the submitting player as if they were accepted regardless of their actual disposition.
  12. God must create one round specific rule at the beginning of the round which would be legal according to the rules.
  13. If during the game there is felt a need to change any Meta rule, it can be accomplished as follows. One of the players may publically suggest the change, and the current body of players may approve or disapprove the change to the ruleset. The change is considered approved if 60% of the players who voted, voted for the change, and if at least 50% of the current players voted (IE, quorum and majority must be achieved). If 50% of the current players have not voted within 7 days, then the change is not approved.

Round Meta Rules
  1. The God for the first round is jtraub@dragoncat.net
  2. A turn will occur each Tuesday and Friday.
  3. When the God submits his judgement for a turn, he may include one rule to be added to the Round Rules. This rule must be such that it would be legal had it been proposed by a player through normal means.

Secret Rule
  1. This rule is unknown to the players.

Game Rules
  1. God will create this rule at the beginning of the round.

Final Rules

[Intro] [Initial / Final] [Proposals] [Player Info] [Secret Rule]

Game Rules
  1. The player who is the scorekeeper shall also be known as the Spelling Bee. This player has the right to reword proposals to fix egregious spelling errors if the correct word is obvious. The Bee may make no other types of changes to the rules.
  2. All players when they join (and all existing players) are given 20 Stars.
A player may spend 5 stars to attempt to Grok the Secret.
A player may only attempt to Grok the Secret once each turn.
A player may not attempt to Grok the Secret if they have less than 5 Stars.

    Grokking is performed as follows:
    1. Any player wishing to Grok must submit privately to the God a statement which is unambiguous, makes a statement about the Secret rule and is possible to answer with a True or False.
    2. When God posts the judgement for proposals during a turn, he will post all players who attempted to Grok during that turn and the word TRUE, FALSE, or ILLEGAL next to each one. He will *not* post the statements that they submitted.
    3. A player who attempted to Grok during that turn and the judgement was FALSE or ILLEGAL shall lose 5 Stars. A player who attempted to Grok and the judgement was TRUE shall lose no Stars. (amended by Proposal 16)

When a player has a proposal accepted as a rule they gain 2 Stars.
  3. All players exist in the game of Eleusis Nomic as Dieties (not GOD so this doesn't conflict w/that rule). Each player should submit to the scorekeeper a description of themselves as a Diety and an explanation of what they are a Diety of (of War, of SPAM, of 12 monkeys and a fish, etc)

Secret Rule

[Intro] [Initial / Final] [Proposals] [Player Info] [Secret Rule]

GOD has disclosed the secret rule. It is:

A proposal is legal if:
a) it does not specify the public revelation of any portion of this rule and the text (not title) of the proposal either:   1) contains any of the words 'harf', 'frink', 'grok' or 'spam' (or some form of those words).
  2) contains the name of an animal or reference to some animalistic trait.
