Players:

2. rufus
3. JT
4. The Gingham Wearer
5. Hubert
6. Vynd
7. else...if
8. Atilla the Pun
9. /dev/joe

The game, and first round, began Mon, 06 Apr 1998 00:54:40 -0400, with Slakko as Brainiac.

Slakko posted the first Ing word, gangrel, at Mon, 06 Apr 1998 03:04:25 -0400.

Slakko posted the results of Round 1 at Thu, 09 Apr 1998 16:07:34 -0400:

Two people correctly guessed the definition of gangrel: Wanderer; vagrant. (or Wandering; vagrant, depending upon your dictionary).

/dev/joe: Any hated beast, especially the wolf.

JT: A vagabond or wanderer. Correct: 3 points.

else...if: A wasting disease.

Hubert: A disreputable person: vagrant, rascal. Correct: 3 points.

Attila the Pun: A disorderly or slovenly dog or other animal.

Vynd: A person who is part animal, or animalistic in appearance or behavior.

This was close - but I didn't count it as correct because vagrants are most commonly thought of just as being unkempt - not actually animalistic. At least in my experience, which is small, I'll admit.

The Gingham Wearer: A small tether.

And rufus failed to submit - and so loses 1 point.

Scores after Round 1:

1. Slakko 0
2. rufus -1
3. JT 3
4. Gingham 0
5. Hubert 3
6. Vynd 0
7. else...if 0
8. Atilla 0
9. /dev/joe 0

rufus' turn began Thu, 09 Apr 1998 16:07:34 -0400.
At Sun, 12 Apr 1998 00:26:54 -0400, rufus announced that the Ing word was nullah.

At Wed, 15 Apr 1998 00:44:40 -0400, rufus announced the list of definitions:

Here are the definitions for round two of fictionary. One player guessed the correct definition so there are only eight to choose from.

  1. All gone, non-existent, or dead.
  2. Utter nothingness; a lack of being.
  3. A sweet Kenyan drink made from a local grass.
  4. A dialect of English, spoken by the inhabitants of a nonexistent island chain.
  5. Gully, ravine
  6. A paste primarily made of sesame seed and avocado, used in cooking as a seasoning or glaze.
  7. An uninteresting person; a bore
  8. An indian pastry known for its thick crust

At Sat, 18 Apr 1998 00:31:39 -0400, rufus announced the results:

JT was the person who submited the correct definition, "gully, ravine" and
so receives 4 points.

> 1. All gone, non-existent, or dead.
from /dev/joe. no votes

> 2. Utter nothingness; a lack of being.
Slakko sent this in. Vynd voted for it.

> 3. A sweet Kenyan drink made from a local grass.
TGW sent this. Noone voted for it. Somehow, I keep reading it "sweet
Klingon"

> 4. A dialect of English, spoken by the inhabitants of a nonexistent
> island chain.
>

from attila the pun. No guesses.
> 5. Gully, ravine
the correct one. Hubert guessed it, and gets 2 points for doing so.

> 6. A paste primarily made of sesame seed and avocado, used in cooking as a
> seasoning or glaze.
Vynd's fiction, voted for by /dev/joe and AtP

>
> 7. An uninteresting person; a bore
hubert guess, TGW and else...if picked this one.

>
> 8. An indian pastry known for its thick crust
else...if submitted this. Slakko voted for it.

So, the big scorers are JT and Hubert, both of whom receive 4 points.
Vynd gets two, Slakko and else...if one. Everybody else gets a big fat
zero.

At Sat, 18 Apr 1998 12:57:51 -0400, JT announced the Ing word for Round 3: dagoba.

At Wed, 22 Apr 1998 10:05:09 -0400, JT posted the list of definitions:

  1. A flowing tree found throughout Asia.
  2. A type of rodent, native to Japan.
  3. A form of marsh grass, found primarily on the East Coast of the United States.
  4. A thin, curved knife.
  5. An oasis or watering hole
  6. A dome-shaped structure built over relics of Buddha or Buddhist saint
  7. Remote, isolated, desolate.
  8. The home planet of Yoda in the Star Wars universe.
  9. ""

At Fri, 24 Apr 1998 19:41:29 -0400, JT posted the results:

else...if failed to submit a definition, so loses 1 point

The correct definition of 'dagoba' was:

A dome-shaped structure built over relics of Buddha or Buddhist saint

No one voted for this answer, so JT gains 2 points.

The other definitions submitted (with who voted for them and points) are as

follows:

TGW - The home planet of Yoda in the Star Wars universe. (no votes)

Slakko - A type of rodent, native to Japan. (no votes)

Hubert - A thin, curved knife. (TGW, Slakko, Hubert - 2 points)

Rufus - A flowing tree found throughout Asia. (else...if - 1 point)

Vynd - An oasis or watering hole. (/dev/joe, Rufus, Atilla the Pun - 3 points)

/dev/joe - Remote, isolated, desolate. (Vynd - 1 point)

Atilla the Pun - A form of marsh grass, found primarily on the East Coast of the United Statesa (no votes)

So, the final scores after Round 3 are

Slakko - 1
Rufus - 0
JT - 9
TGW - 0
Hubert - 9
Vynd - 5
else...if - 0
Atilla - 0
/dev/joe - 1

It was later revealed that JT's definition was not a verbatim transcription of a Dictionary Definition.

At Sun, 26 Apr 1998 11:09:27 -0400, The Gingham Wearer announced that mho was the Ing word for Round 4.

At Sat, 02 May 1998 09:26:31 -0400, The Gingham Wearer announced the results of Round 4:

The ing word as I'm sure you all remember was mho. As Alfvaen predicted this round ended with more than one person guessing the correct answer.
/dev/joe, JT, Hubert and rufus all knew that a mho was the unit of electrical conductivity equal to the reciprocal of an ohm.
else...if, Slakko and Vynd all submitted an incorrect definition.
I can't find any definition from Attila the Pun, although I could have missed it.
I believe that means AtP and I lose some points and those that submitted a correct definition but I'll leave that to someone else to work out. I also believe the next brainiac (or first, up 'till now none of us have been all that brainy) is Hubert.

At Wed, 06 May 1998 00:34:08 -0400, Hubert announced the definitions for the Ing word, spital:

One Bluffer committed a correct definition for "spital." Three guesses as to who it was, and the first two and a half don't count.
The remaining definitions are:
  1. A hospital.
  2. Of or pertaining to farming; as in Spitalfields.
  3. A Doric pedestal.
  4. ""
  5. feeling worse than usual, indisposed
  6. A small stake.
  7. A set of small skewers projecting out from a main spit.
  8. a small container into which mushrooms may be placed.

At Tue, 12 May 1998 00:13:27 -0400, Hubert announced the results of Round 5:

AAAAAAnyway, in round 5 of Fictionary:

JT, to no one's surprise, submitted a correct definition for "spital," which was "A hospital." and gains 4 points. Other definition authorships were as follows:
Slakko: Of or pertaining to farming; as in Spitalfields. (no votes)
else...if: A Doric pedestal. (TGW)
Vynd: feeling worse than usual, indisposed (/dev/joe)
TGW: A small stake. (else...if, AtP)
/dev/joe: A set of small skewers projecting out from a main spit. (Vynd)
AtP: a small container into which mushrooms may be placed. (no votes)
rufus: "" (no votes)
Slakko gained 2 points for voting for the correct definition.
/dev/joe voted for Vynd's, and Vynd returned the favor: they each gain 1 point.
TGW voted for else...if's, who gained 1 point.
Attila the Pun and a thankful else...if both voted for TGW's definition.
TGW gains 2 points, eir first. And second, for that matter.
rufus did not vote, and nobody voted for eir definition. E loses a point.

At Thu, 14 May 1998 23:31:38 -0400, Vynd announced that sourdine was the Ing word for Round 6.
At Mon, 18 May 1998 15:58:21 -0400, Vynd announced the list of definitions:

We had duplicate submissions this time out, so some were discarded. Have at it!

  1. an organ stop resulting in a soft muted sound
  2. " "
  3. Sardine.
  4. A decorative dinner plate.
  5. A stale sardine.
  6. An unpleasant tasting fish.
  7. A medeieval French polearm.
  8. A type of grape grown primarily in eastern France.

At Fri, 22 May 1998 12:38:00 -0400, Vynd announced the results of Round 6.

Complete voting and authorship:

1. an organ stop resulting in a soft muted sound
Correct definition. Voted for by JT and else...if.
2. " "
AtP and rufus, AtP (sheeped by default)
3. Sardine.
 /dev/joe, voted for by Slakko
4. A decorative dinner plate.
 Slakko, voted for by /dev/joe
5. A stale sardine.
 JT, no votes
6. An unpleasant tasting fish.
 TGW, no votes
7. A medeieval French polearm.
 Hubert, voted for by TGW
8. A type of grape grown primarily in eastern France.

So the scores for this round are:

else...if: 3
/dev/joe: 1
Slakko: 1
Hubert: 1

JT: 18
TGW: 2
Hubert: 13
Vynd: 6
else...if: 4
AtP: -3
/dev/joe: 3

At Wed, 27 May 1998 18:43:53 -0400, else...if announced that the Ing word was geniculate.
else...if failed to supply the list of definitions within 6 days of this announcement, and so forfeited 4 points and ended the round prematurely.

else...if left Fictionary at Thu, 04 Jun 1998 16:14:34 -0400.
rufus left Fictionary at Thu, 04 Jun 1998 16:38:18 -0400.

At Thu, 04 Jun 1998 21:37:47 -0400, Attila the Pun announced that the Ing word was zeugma.
At Tue, 09 Jun 1998 20:38:04 -0400, Attila the Pun announced the list of definitions:

  1. A linguistic paradox
  2. " "
  3. Use of a word to govern two or more words though appropriate to only one.
  4. A literary technique in which a series of words are joined together by hyphens.
  5. A skin complaint involving a blotchy rash.

Attila the Pun failed to list the results, so it became the Scorekeeper's (Alfvaen's) job.
At Tue, 30 Jun 1998 23:05:45 -0400, Alfvaen announced the final scoring for this round:

/dev/joe: 4 points, for submitting correct definition.

  2. A vibration or small movement.
  3. ""
  4. A U. S. marine.
  5. An alkene possessing two or more double carbon bonds.

Final results of the round were announced at Tue, 07 Jul 1998 18:00:12 -0400:

JT submitted a correct definition this round, scoring 4 points.
The actual definition was #4.

Vynd submitted #1, Mr Tambourine Man submitted #2, Slakko submitted #5.
867-5309 did not submit a definition, losing 1 point.
Slakko voted for #1, giving Vynd a point.
Vynd, MTM, and 867-5309 sheeped by default, losing 1 point each.
Nobody voted for the correct definition, giving /dev/joe 2 points.

Slakko was Brainiac for the next round.
E failed to post an "ing" word at Fri, 10 Jul 1998 23:49:53 -0400, and hence e lost one point, and the round ended.

JT announced that "catarrh" was the ing word at Sat, 11 Jul 1998 03:53:37 -0400.

The final results of this round were announced at Thu, 16 Jul 1998 01:54:41 -0400:

The correct definition was indeed number 3, Inflammation of a mucous membrane.

Vynd, 867-5309, and /dev/joe each recieve 2 points.
Vynd, Slakko, and MTM all performed the default action on submission and so each lose 1 point.
Slakko and MTM sheeped by default.

The definitions submitted were

867-5309 - A goutlike infectious disease.
/dev/joe - A hacking cough.

As Mr. Tambourine Man was on vacation, e submitted the word "ing" by default.
At Mon, 20 Jul 1998 09:35:59 -0400, Mr. Tambourine Man announced the results of the round:

/dev/joe and JT both submitted a correct definition for the word "ing" which meant "A pasture or meadow; generally one lying low, near a river." and everyone else failed to submit a move therefore submitting the default "". The upshot of this is that /dev/joe and JT gain three points each and everyone else loses one.

867-5309 announced that "evzone" was the ing word at Tue, 21 Jul 1998 00:52:12 -0400.
At Tue, 28 Jul 1998 23:37:03 -0400 it was announced that e had defaulted.

As a result, 867-5309 lost 4 points, and Vynd became the Brainiac.

Vynd announced that "sinciput" was the ing word at Thu, 30 Jul 1998 23:16:50 -0400.

1. Forehead.

2. To successfully putt in golf.

3. Any nasal cavity,

4. A bone carving of a frog, considered a good luck charm in some cultures.

5. " "

At Sun, 09 Aug 1998 10:08:51 -0400, Vynd announced the results:

The correct definition was number 1. JT submitted this definition to me, and received 4 points for it. Slakko voted for this definition, so he received 2 points.

/dev/joe also voted for definition 1, and received 2 points, but he also receives a point because 867-5309 voted for the definition that /dev/joe submitted, number 4. So /dev/joe tallied atotal of 3 points this round.

The definitions 2 and 3, submitted by 867-5309 and Slakko, respectively, received no votes. Accordingly, 867-5309 scores no points this round.

Definition number 5 was the default definition, submitted by Mr. Tambourine Man, and no one else. Earlier reports of duplicate submissions were in error, my apologies. MTM sheeped, although not by default. He receives no points for his votes, but does lose one for having defaulted in the submissions phase. So he gets -1 points this round.

As Brainiac, I failed to score any points this round.

At Sun, 09 Aug 1998 15:53:33 -0400, /dev/joe announced that the Ing word was "fitchew".

At Mon, 10 Aug 1998 00:16:49 -0400, /dev/joe announced the list of definitions:

  6. A coin purse.

At Thu, 13 Aug 1998 02:04:53 -0400, the results were released by /dev/joe:

MTM submitted #5. JT submitted #2. Slakko submitted #6.
867-5309 submitted #3. Vynd submitted #1. The actual definition was #4.

JT sheeped. 867-5309 voted for #1. MTM voted for #3.
Slakko and Vynd sheeped by default.

Slakko and Vynd each lose a point for making a default action, but Vynd gets a point back because 867-5309 voted for his definition. 867-5309 also gets a point because MTM voted for his definition, and I get 2 points because nobody voted for the correct definition.

JT won this game of Fictionary.
