The Wikit Pitch

The WikitPitch is an open expanse of grassland on which the game of Wikit is played. The "WikitPitch" Wiki page is considered part of the gamestate. It is divided into "patches" or "squares", each represented by a single character. Players are represented on the WikitPitch with an upper-case letter, clarified in the page's Key.

Players

If a WikiNomic Player is not yet present on the WikitPitch, he or she may select an unused letter for themselves and place themselves in either of the Pitch's EndZones. (This is not an Action.)

If a WikitPlayer? is independent e may leave the game without causing any action. E may, however, not join on the same or the next WikitDay?. E may also not join again if there has been no goal since e left the game.

After 29 Apr 2001, if a non-Droid Player fails to make any WikiNomic Actions on three consecutive days (excluding weekends and NationalHolidays), e is replaced by a new Droid whose name is the same as that of the Player but with the string "Droid" appended. All other player attributes are carried over to the new Droid. If that Player subsequently wishes to return to the game, e may replace the Droid with emself, again with all player attributes of the Droid other than Droidness carried over to emself.

Adjacency and distances

A place on the WikitPitch is said to be adjacent to another if it is only 1 character away in the representation on the WikitPitch. This might be in the horizontal, vertical or a diagonal direction.

The distance between two patches on the WikitPitch is equal to the minimum number of "steps" from one patch to another adjacent patch it takes to get from one to the other. (These "steps" are not necessarily legal Steps for a Player to take; e.g. they could involve "stepping" onto TheWall.) Equivalently, if the two patches have coordinates (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), then the distance between them is max ( |x1-x2|, |y1-y2| ).

Actions

Several kinds of Actions are possible within the game of Wikit.

A Player may perform up to five Actions every day, excluding Saturday, Sunday, and NationalHolidays, unless otherwise stated herein.

Two Actions are called consecutive if no opposing Player has made an action after the first and before the second. (Team-members are considered to oppose everyone except other members of their Team. Independent Players oppose everyone. Note that actions on two different days may still be consecutive.) No Player may cause more than six consecutive actions (of eir own and/or of Droids they control) at any time.

A Player who changes the WikiNomicRuleset (including, but not limited to, the RulesOfWikit) may not subsequently make any Wikit Actions until an opposing Player makes an action.

Corrections

If a Player has made an incorrect or unfinished Action (eg. forgetting to drop an Object when obliged to, or using more Actions than they have), any Player on the same Team may correct or complete the Action on their behalf. Also, if the incorrect or unfinished Action is preventing Action from another Player, that Player may correct or complete the Action. It is considered impolite for non-teammates to correct or complete the Action to their own advantage, however. If a Player's Action is corrected, that Player's must Apologize (which is an Action) by adding to the PageOfHumbleApologies before taking any other Actions.

Objects

Some game Objects are defined as Movable. If a Player is adjacent to a Movable Object, or adjacent to a Player holding one, he or she may move it into their own possession. This is an Action.

If a Player is holding an Object, e may (and in some circumstances must) drop it onto an adjacent empty patch of grass. This is also an Action. (If the rules compel a Player to drop an object, and there are no adjacent empty patches of grass, the object may be dropped on any empty patch of grass on the WikitPitch.)

Moving on the Pitch

A Step is an Action. A Player making a "Step" involves them moving to an empty patch of Grass adjacent to their current location on the WikitPitch.

Any Step that begins on a patch of Grass adjacent to a Player who is not on your Team costs an extra Action.

Kicking Players

If you are Adjacent to a Player, you may Kick that Player, which is an Action. Kicking a Player who is carrying an Object causes them to Drop that Object (this doesn't cost the Kicked Player an Action. The Kicker controls where the Object is dropped). Kicking a Player who is not carrying an Object causes them to Move one square, in a direction chosen by the Kicker. This Move must keep the Kicked Player adjacent to the Kicker - if this is not possible, then no Move is made. A Move due to being Kicked does not cost the Kicked Player an Action.

Grass

If an Object is destroyed or moved whilst on the pitch, the area it vacates is always an empty patch of Grass. The fourth columns of Grass from the left and right edges of the WikitPitch are PaintedGrass rather than Grass, although it behaves the same as normal Grass. These Painted lines mark the Pitch's two EndZones (the EndZones including the lines themselves).

PaintedGrass also marks the 3x3 HomeSquare in the center of the WikitPitch (the HomeSquare including the painted patches themselves).

The Flag

TheFlag is an important part of the game of Wikit, and is a Movable Object. TheFlag is either somewhere on the pitch, or in a Player's possession (noted in their key). A Player posessing TheFlag may proudly use the Title FlagHolder and even update the Title page himself in this manner, without being improper at all.

The Ball

TheBall is quite critical in the game of Wikit, too, and is also a Movable Object. TheBall is always somewhere on the pitch, or in a Player's possession (noted in their key).

If a Player is adjacent to TheBall, or is carrying it, he or she may kick it to any empty patch of Grass no further than ten squares from them. This is an Action. After a ball kick, and before the ball is picked up or moved again, any Player not on the same team as the kicking Player may use one Action to move TheBall to any empty patch of Grass up to three squares away from the original landing spot. (The intervening squares need not be empty patches of grass.) This is known as a KickShift, and may be done only once per kick.

The Wall

TheWall is made of stout stone blocks. Players cannot Step through TheWall; and, no, they can't climb over it or tunnel under it, either. They can kick TheBall over it, though.

Players being the clever sorts they are, they can add or remove Wall sections next to where they're standing if they like, although any added section must touch at least one existing Wall section, and can be built only on empty Grass. Adding a Wall section is an Action. Removing a Wall section is an Action for each Wall section Adjacent to the section being removed. A Player who is carrying an Object can neither build nor demolish a Wall, however.

PogoStick

There seem to be a couple of PogoSticks on the pitch, too. They are Moveable Objects. A player may not pick up a PogoStick if they are carrying other Objects, nor may they pick up other Objects if they are carrying a PogoStick.

A player carrying a PogoStick may make two consecutive Moves in a single Action (if the Player is forced to drop the PogoStick after one of the two, they may not make the second).

A player carrying a PogoStick who is next to another player must immediately drop the PogoStick, though this drop does not cost an Action. (Whichever player caused the adjacency controls where the PogoStick is dropped, within normal Object-dropping rules.)

Teams

Wikit Players are divided into Teams - listed in the key on the WikitPitch page. Players in no team are considered Independent. Each Player's Team affiliation is noted in the Key.

A Team is said to be older than another Team if it was created earlier, or if its name is alphabetically before the other if they were created simultaneously. Creation dates are logged on the TheTeams page.

Any Player not already assigned to a Team may assign themselves to a Team whose current membership (ignoring TheDroids) is equal to or less than another Team. If e is the first to join a Team, e may choose the Team's name, which must be a color.

Any Player may leave eir Team (and become Independent) unless this would cause eir Team to have two or more fewer non-Droid members than another Team.

Joining or leaving a Team takes five Actions. This applies to Droids as well as to non-Droid players. Notwithstanding the other provisions of this rule, a Player may not join or leave a Team if doing so would require a Droid that does not have five Actions available to join or leave a Team.

Points

Teams and individual players may earn Points as follows:

After a Goal is scored, TheBall is moved immediately to the center of the HomeSquare. If there already is an Object or Player in the center of the HomeSquare, the Player who scored the Goal may move that Object or Player to any other empty patch in the HomeSquare, or to any empty patch on the WikitPitch if there are no empty patches in the HomeSquare.

After a Goal, each Player must drop any objects e is carrying and move directly to a position of eir choice inside either of the EndZones before e can take any new Actions. (These are not Actions. Aside from that, objects are dropped according to normal object-dropping rules.)

After a Goal, the Target EndZone should be set to belong to nobody.

Target EndZones

At all times, there is a Target EndZone (either East or West), which belongs to one of the Teams, or to nobody. The Team who owns the EndZone is known as the Base Team. If a Player on a Team other than the Base Team Kicks, KickShifts? or picks up TheBall, the Target EndZone changes from East to West or vice-versa, and the Team of the acting Player becomes the Base Team. The Actions of an Independent Player never change the Target EndZone.

The MysteriousCheerleaders

The Mysterious Wikit Cheerleaders stand out of shot, and chant bizarre slogans at the Players in their deranged sing-song voices. Any Player may change the current Cheerleader Slogan, given on the WikitPitch page, provided that the slogan is first fed through http://www.tashian.com/carl/multibabel. This takes three Actions. Old Slogans should be archived on the MysteriousCheerleaders page.

If the MysteriousCheerleaders appear to be cheering a Team (i.e. if their slogan includes the color of that Team), the maximum number of Actions that each member of the Team may perform, per day, is increased by one. Otherwise, if the MysteriousCheerleaders appear to be cheering a Player (i.e. if their slogan does not include any Team colors, but includes a Player's name), the maximum number of Actions that this Player may perform, per day, is increased the the number of members the biggest team has divided by two and rounded up, if necessary.

A Player only gets the bonus Action if the appropriate chant was set before that Player's first Action that day, and is not changed again before their final Action that day.

The Droids

TheDroids count as Players within the game of Wikit. An Independent Droid is powered down and may take no actions other than joining a Team. If there are no Independent Droids, one new Independent Droid is created and may be placed in an EndZone by any Player. A Droid is said to be older than another Droid if it was created earlier, or if its name is alphabetically before the other if they were created simultaneously. Creation dates are logged on the TheDroids page.

A Droid which is a member of a Team may be controlled by other members of its Team.

Droids may not leave eir Teams except under the following circumstances. When a non-Droid player joins or leaves a Team, the following adjustments must be made:

If at any time all teams have at least one Droid member with enough Actions available, then the oldest n Droids on each team will leave each team and become Independent, where n is the number of Droids on the team with the fewest Droids.

If a team has two non-Droid members, no member of this team is allowed to control a Droid on three consecutive days. If a team has more than two non-Droid members, no member is allowed to control a Droid on two consecutive days. Two days are consecutive, if there is no day in between where any player does an action. Only one player may control each Droid per day.

The BlackHoles?

If the ball moves over the black hole, it will stop there.
