-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MORNINGTON NOMIC Proposals for Voting on in Year One, Week Thirty-Seven -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 248 - Do You Like My Tie Today, Carol? [Amendment] Rule 1.13.1 (The Richard Whiteley Experience) shall be amended by replacing the final paragraph with text as follows: "Certain sections of line are described on the London Underground map as being open at Peak Hours only. Peak Hours shall be defined as 0800 to 1000 inclusive, and 1600 to 1800 inclusive. Note that outside of peak hours a Player may not play a Station on such a section of line (that is, using the line code of Peak Only line section). If a Player finds emself at such a restricted location outside of Peak Hours, e may not make a normal Move." { Comment: The explicit definition of peak hours Stations is not only not complete, but isn't robust either. I've also removed the free line change clause. The wording is intended to disallow Moves along the inactive line section, whilst permitting any Actions which might rescue the Player (eg Wild, Home). The Carol referred to in the Proposal title is Carol Vorderman, Richard Whiteley's co-presenter of the Channel 4 game show Countdown. I can't remember if Richard ever said this, but it's just the kind of inane, vaguely dim-witted thing he might. } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 249 - Stacks of Fun [Amendment] Amend Rule 1.4.1 (Token Gesture) as follows: Replace the paragraph beginning "Unless their destination is otherwise specified" with the following - "Unless the destination of forfeited Tokens is explicitly stated within the Ruleset, the Tokens must be placed on a Token Stack at a Station selected by the forfeiting Player according to the following restrictions: 1. the Station selected must be a valid destination for Token placement 2. the Station must be in a different Quadrant than that of the forfeiting Player's final location 3. the forfeiting Player may not gain immediate benefit from the placement (eg completing a Token stack for a Token bonus is forbidden)" { Comment: I think that covers it. The possibility of getting a Token bonus from completing a Token stack remotely was a little disturbing to me. } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 250 - Walking Talking Johnny Cash Blues [Other, Multiple] [Enactment: Walk the Walk] There shall be an Action of Walking which may be performed at the end of a Player's turn, after eir Move and all other compatible Actions. The Walking Action shall take the form [Walking to ] ... after which the Player's position will be the Station named in the Walking Action. Walking may only be performed under the following circumstances: - to travel between two Stations of the same name on different lines which are not co-located on the map (eg between Waterloo Interchange and Waterloo (JL), or between Turnham Green (PD) and Turnham Green (DS)) - to travel along the Line the Player is currently on when the Line is inactive (eg power failure, off-peak) with an effective LV of 1 (eg Shoreditch to Whitechapel off-peak). Line change is permitted at the destination Station. The Player's LV is zero after a Walking Action. No Player may Walk to Mornington Crescent. The Walking Action is considered to occur after all other Actions, but may not be combined with other Actions which either modify the Player's position (eg Wild, Straddle) or which are aggressive. { Comment: This Action is analogous to leaving the the Underground system and walking a short distance. } [Amendment: "She's Only Playing"] Rule 1.13.1 (The Richard Whiteley Experience) shall be amended to remove the last sentence of the final paragraph (the sentence beginning "However, if e moves to one of these Stations ..."). { Comment: Since we can now Walk away from peak-only stations at off-peak, we don't need special pleading. Incidentally, can anyone identify the source of the quote I've used for the title of this Amendment? } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 251 - Ghost Stations [Enactment] A Player may perform an Action of "[Ghost]" during eir Turn, permitting em to play any street name as eir Move (provided that that street name has not already been used by another Player in a Ghost Move). This Action may only be performed if the Player pays two Black Tokens, and is known as "playing a Ghost Station". When a Player plays a Ghost Station, eir Piece is considered not to be present on the Map until the start of eir next Move, at which point it returns to the last non-Ghost Station they Moved to. { Comments: A way to "hover" if you're being pursued, and the implementation of a long-standing and applaudable Crescent thing. } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 252 - Differing Dawn [Amendment] Add the following to Rule 1.1.2 (A New Game):- "When a Player joins a Game:- * E has no defined Home Station. * E owns no Ticket Stubs. * E has two Black Tokens, no Blue Tokens, two Red Tokens, two Bronze Tokens, no Silver Tokens and no Gold Tokens. * Eir Line Velocity is zero. * Eir Piece is not situated on the Map." And remove:- "* All Players' Token counts and Line Velocities are reduced to zero. * All Players' Home Stations and Piece Positions become undeclared." And replace "All Ticket Stubs become ownerless." with "All Ticket Stubs are ownerless.", "the following changes are made to the state of that Game and its Players" with "the following initial conditions apply to that Game". { Comments: Fairly obvious rewording so that certain conditions affect the new Game when it starts, and others affect new Players when they join - this is reasonably urgent stuff, in light of the multi-game thing. The initial-Token thing seems like a fair bonus, allowing Players a small degree of freedom to switch Lines, Block and pay tolls, rather than to arse around carefully collecting them before doing anything. } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 253 - So Many Ways For You To Spend Your Time [Other, Multiple] To Rule 1.14.1 (Tokens All Over The Place), add:- "A Game's Token Stacks should be listed in a section of the Game State Document, with the following example format:- +--------------------+--------------+ +--------------------+--------------+ | Dollis Hill | BrSiGo | | Euston | ReSi | | Finchley & Frognal | GoSiBrReBuBu | | Morden | BlBlBl | +--------------------+--------------+ +--------------------+--------------+" { Comments: Better to have it in the GSD than a Speaker-maintained Web page, I feel, because [a] it'll always be up to date, [b] you can make your Moves just by checking the GSD; not having to browse the Web a bit as well, and [c] I won't have to arse around updating it all the time. (Which I've just realised I haven't been doing; I'll trawl and update it after the Week-End stuff.) } and replace:- "A player may not place a Token on a Stack which has a Token numbered 6." with "A Player may not place a Token on a Stack if it already has six Tokens in it, or if it would be the first Token of a Stack and there are already twelve Token Stacks in play. If this means that there are no valid locations for a Token to be dropped, that Token is destroyed." { Comments: So that things don't get too out of hand. } Also remove the first paragraph of Rule 1.14.2 (Stack em High, Sell em Cheap). { Comments: It was an Enactment Proposal with a "This may only pass if..." caveat, which got written in because there was no explicit reference to it being taken out. } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 254 - Synchronise Watches [Other, Multiple] 1. 'It's Time...' (Amendment) In Rule 1.3.1 (Taking A Turn) amend the paragraph: "If a Player does not make eir Move within this time, any Player from that Game may submit a Move of "Forced Pass" for that Player. If it the Forcing Player would Move next, e may submit eir Move on the same GSD." to read: "If a Player does not make eir Move within this time, any Player from that Game may submit a Move of "Forced Pass" for that Player, and advance the Game Time by one hour. If the Forcing Player would Move next, e may submit eir Move on the same GSD." 2. 'Time Me Up' (Amendment) Amend Rule 1.13.1 (The Richard Whiteley Experience) as follows: i. Remove the paragraph beginning 'Stations that are closed...', the list of stations and the footnote to the list, and insert the following in their place: Each Station shall have a State that is either Open or Closed. Certain Stations are described as having Restricted Opening; the State of these Stations shall be either Open or Closed depending on the current Game Time, according to the list below. A player may not move to a Station that is Closed on eir Turn, but e may may pass through it, provided it is not a Terminus. If a Player is at a Station that is Closed when it is eir Turn, e must play 'Pass' as eir Move. Closed Stations still count as part of the Move with regard to Line Velocity, so that a move from Westminster to Mansion House requires an LV of 4, whether Temple is Open or Closed. Stations with Restricted Opening: Barbican -- open Mon to Sat 0800 to 2300 Cannon Street -- open Mon to Fri until 2100 Chancery Lane -- open Mon to Sat Heathrow Terminal 4* Pudding Mill Lane* Shoreditch* Temple -- open Mon to Sat Turnham Green* West Brompton -- open Mon to Fri *The opening times of these Stations shall be added at a later date by one or more Points of Order. When the information is complete, this footnote shall be deleted. Until that point, these Stations may be played as if they had no Restricted Opening. ii. Remove the paragraph beginning 'Certain sections of line...' and insert the following paragraph and list in its place: Certain Line Segments also have Restricted Opening, as detailed in the list below. A Player may not move along any part of a Line Segment that is Closed when it is eir Turn. If a Player is at a Station on a Line Segment that is Closed when it is eir Turn, e must play 'Pass' as eir Move. Peak Hours shall be described as Mon to Sat 0800 to 1900 inclusive. Line Segments with Restricted Opening (applies to either Line Direction): Chalfont & Latimer to Chesham [MP] -- Peak Hours only Earl's Court to Kensington (Olympia) [DS] -- open Mon to Sat 0700 to 2100, Sun 0800 to 2100 Rayners Lane to Uxbridge [PD] -- Peak Hours only Waterloo to Bank [WC] -- Peak Hours only Whitechapel to Barking [HC] -- Peak Hours only Whitechapel to Shoreditch [EL] -- Peak Hours and Sun 0800 to 1300 Woodford to Hainault [CN] -- open Mon to Fri until 2000 Note that the Line Segments Rayners Lane to Uxbridge [PD] and Whitechapel to Barking [HC] have alternative possible Line Codes. If a Player is at a Station on one of these Line Segments when it is closed, e may still move away from that Station by using the alternative Line and paying the usual Token cost for a change of Line. {Comments: various tweakings that have crossed my mind since the original proposal was made, partly based on Dunx's comments about the rules being self-contained, though I think we can keep the references to 'real life' and 'real time'.} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 255 - Multiple Category Tweaking Malarkey [Other, Multiple] 1. How Many Hats Make Five? (Amendment) Remove the categories Populated and Holy from the first paragraph of Rule 1.4.6 (You Can Leave Your Hat On) and add them to the list of Station Categories in Rule 1.17.6 (Station Categories). 2. It's The End Of The Line As We Know It (Amendment) In Rule 1.17.6 (Station Categories) amend the definition of Terminus to read: "Any Station that when played as a Move with an appropriate Line Code has only one adjacent Station with the same Line Code." {Comment: does this make sense?} 3. Covent? Convent? Coven? (Amendment) Remove 'Covent' from the definition of Holy Stations. {Comments: bye bye to absurdity and bizarre definitions} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 256 - Keep The Faith [Other, Multiple] i. Enact the Rule: "Any Player who plays a Holy Station when Game Time is any time on Sunday must pay 1 Silver Token." ii. Adjust the Token Cost table accordingly. {Comments: Hallelujah!} --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
