-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MORNINGTON NOMIC Proposals for Voting on in Year One, Week Thirty-Five -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 224 - Everything Fits Into Place [Other, Multiple] 1. Station Categories [Enactment] The following categories of Station exist:- A to Z - An A to Z Station is one with the string "Street", "Road" or "Lane" in its Name. Compass - A Compass Station is one with the string "North", "South", "East" or "West" in its Name. Green - A Green Station is one with the string "Green" in its Name. High - A High Station is one with the string "High" in its Name. High Hill - A High Hill Station is one with both the strings "High" and "Hill" in its Name. Hill - A Hill Station is one with the string "Hill" in its Name. Overground - An Overground Station is one that has a connection to British Rail. Park - A Park Station is one with the string "Park" in its Name. Plant - A Plant Station is one with the string "Grove", "Garden" or "Wood" in its name. Terminus - A Terminus Station is a Station which has only one adjacent Station. Verdant - A Verdant Station is one with the string "Park", "Green" or "Garden" in its name. Stations may fall into more than one category. Stations that fall into no category are deemed 'Hors Classification'. 2. Hedge Trimming [Amendment] Remove the paragraph beginning "A "Park" Station is defined as being..." from Rule 1023 (Parks and Greens Cascade). Replace:- "The exception to this is if a Player can make a valid Move to another "Plant" Station, which includes Groves, Gardens and Woods. If a Player moves to another "Plant" Station they can declare the Cascade over in the following manner:" with:- "The exception to this is if a Player can make a valid Move to a "Plant" Station. If a Player moves to a "Plant" Station, e can declare the Cascade over in the following manner:" 3. Wombling [Amendment] In Rule 1028 (Ticket Stubs), replace:- "A Player may play a "Getting Stub" Action along with a Move of "Pass" at any Station that has a Connection with British Rail, provide that e is the first to do so at that Station. A "Getting Stub" Action may not be played at North London." with:- "A Player may play a "Getting Stub" Action along with a Move of "Pass" at any Overground Station, provided that e is the first to do so at that Station." 4. Running with Scissors [Amendment] In Rule 1041 (Token Running), remove the string "(a Station with only one adjacent Station)". 5. Hats Off [Amendment] In Rule 1062 (You Can Leave Your Hat On), replace:- "There are five Categories of station: 1. Verdant (any station with Park, Green or Garden in its name) 2. Termini (any station at the end of a line, including both Heathrow stations) 3. Compass (any station with North, South, East or West in its name) 4. A to Z (any station with Street, Road or Lane in its name) 5. Overground (any station with a connection to British Rail) Stations may fall into more than one category. Stations that fall into no category are deemed 'Hors Classification'." with:- "There are five Categories of Station which a Hat may be claimed from: A to Z, Compass, Overground, Terminus and Verdant." Also replace "[Stealing Hat from ]" with "[Knocking Hat off ]", "Stolen Hats" with "Knocked Hats" and "[Stealing Hat] Action" with "Hat-Knocking Action". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 225 - British Rail Travel [Enactment] A Player may perform the Action of "[Visiting ]", where Place is any British Rail Station in Great Britain. This Action may only be performed if the Player pays six Bronze Tokens, is at an Overground Station, and has played "Pass" as eir Move this Turn. Upon playing this Action, the Player gains one Gold Token. A Player may perform the Action of "[Late Arrival from ]", where Place is any British Rail Station in Great Britain. This Action may only be performed if the Player pays two Blue Tokens. If a Player's previous Move (discounting Forced Passes) included an Action of "[Visiting ]", and another Player has since performed an Action of "[Late Arrival from ]", for the same Place, the Player must play a Pass (with no Actions) as eir Move this Turn. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 226 - Passing Go [Amendment] To the Token Table in Rule 1007 (Token Gesture), add:- "Playing any Valid Move | +1 Bronze" { Comments: We could do with a way to get Bronze Tokens - a one-per-turn approach seems to me to be a fair one. } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 227 - Face/Egg Interactive Multimedia Proposal [Amendment] In Rule 1062 (You can keep your hat on), amend the line: "A player may own no more than one hat from each category at any time." to read: "A player may own no more than one hat from each category at any time, nor may e own more than one hat collected from a single station at any time." {Comment: prevents hanging around at, say, West Ruislip, which falls into three different categories. I was going to do something about the terminus stations thing, but can't think of anything suitable} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 228 - Make More Hats Easier [Amendment] Amend Rule 1062 (You Can Leave Your Hat On) with the following changes: * Change "There are five Categories of Station:" to "The following list contains the legal Categories of Station:" * Remove the numbering from the list, changing it into an unsorted list. * Change "one of these five categories," to "one of the listed categories," -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 229 - Hats and more Hats [Amendment] Amend Rule 1062 (You Can Leave Your Hat On) with the following changes: * Remove the list item "Termini" * Add "Populated (any station with Town, City or Manor in its name) Holy (any station with Friars, Saint (or the abbreviation thereof), Angel, Covent, Canon, or Temple)" to the list of legal Categories. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 230 - Make The Game Longer [Amendment] Amend Rule 1007 (Token Gesture) to change the cost of 'Playing "Mornington Crescent" as eir Move' to '-3 Gold'. {Comments: The main purpose of this is to prevent the fairly standard 'charge in from nearby station' gambits (e.g. Aldgate). } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 231 - More Tinkering with the Tinkering Ban [Amendment] In Rule 210 (Direct Tinkering Ban), replace "If the passing of a Proposal would directly cause any aspect of the Mornington Nomic Game State (such as Token levels, Piece positions or Station Blocks) to be altered," with "If the passing of a Proposal would directly cause any aspect of the Nomic other than the Ruleset or Kudos scores in the Game State Document to be altered," { Comment: This reflects the fact that the kudos score is influenced by things other than game play. It could be argued that the passing of a proposal does already directly affect the GSD in that the results of voting alters the Kudos. This amendment clarifies this point. It also allows credit/discredit to be had in its appropriate place with regards the repealing or amendment of rules: c.f. Proposal 204, week 32. } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 232 - Time is of the Essence [Other, Multiple] 1. 'So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye' Repeal the current Rule 1036 - Time and Tide (Mutable) 2. 'The Richard Whiteley Experience' Enact the following new rule: Each Game currently in progress shall have a unique Game Time, which shall be recorded on the Game State Document for that Game. Game Time shall consist of the same units of measurement as real time (but shall bear no other relation to real time) and shall be expressed as the day followed by the time in the 24-hour clock format. When a new Game commences (i.e. when the first Player to move in a new game takes eir Turn) Game Time is set to Monday 0600. Each active Player subsequently adds 1 hour to the Game Time on the Game State Document when e makes eir Move. Failure to update the Game Time on eir Move shall be regarded as an Illegal Move. A Player's Move is deemed to take place at the given Game Time. When Game Time reaches 2300, the next active Player shall, on eir Move, advance Game Time to 0600 on the following day, e.g. if Rushton's Move has a Game Time of Wednesday 2300, and Garden is to move next, then Garden's Move has a Game Time of Thursday 0600. Stations that are closed at certain times in real life are deemed to be closed at the corresponding Game Time. Players may move through a closed Station, providing it is not a terminus, but may not stop at it. Closed Stations are still counted as part of the Move, with regard to a Player's Line Velocity, such that a Player moving from Westminster to Mansion House still requires an LV of 4 when Temple is closed. If a Player's current Position is at a Station which is not open when it is eir Turn, that Player must play 'Pass' as eir Move. These are the Stations with restricted opening times: Turnham Green -- [restricted]* Heathrow Terminal 4 -- [restricted]* Kensington (Olympia) -- [restricted]* Temple -- closed Sunday Cannon Street -- [restricted]* Roding Valley, Chigwell, Grange Hill -- on the line segment Woodford to Hainault [CN] a Player may not move in the direction of Hainault after 2000 Pudding Mill Lane -- [restricted]* Shoreditch -- [restricted]* Chancery Lane -- closed Sunday *The specific nature of these restrictions shall be added at a later date, at which point this paragraph shall remove itself from the rule. Until that point, these Stations may be played without restriction. {Comment: it's a bugger to find out. A phone call to LT may be required, unless anyone can help} Certain sections of line are described on the London Underground map as being open at Peak Hours only. Peak Hours shall be defined as 0800 to 1000 inclusive, and 1600 to 1800 inclusive. Note that outside of peak hours a Player may not play a Station on the line segments Whitechapel to Barking with the line code [HC], or Rayners Lane to Uxbridge with the Line Code [PD]. However, if e moves to one of these Stations with inside peak hours, e may move away from it on eir next Turn, but eir Move is deemed to have commenced on either the District or Metropolitan Line respectively. {Comment: the current format of Game Time seems to be a wasted opportunity because it doesn't have any real impact on game play, so this proposal is aimed at creating an entirely new framework for Game Time, which can be amended as people see fit. It's proposed as a new rule rather than an amendment, because the old rule has basically been thrown out of the window and the new rule starts from scratch.} 3. 'Get A Move On' Enact the following new rule: Any Player may pay n Blue Tokens to perform the pre-Move action of advancing Game Time by n hours; this action is expressed in the format [Game Time: +0n00]. {Comment: The advancing Game Time Action has been retained to ensure scope for devious play. There is probably a host of other ways in which Game Time may be manipulated to suit one's own malicious ends......} 4. 'A New Dawn' Amend Rule 1047 (A New Game) so that the line: " * Game Time is Monday 0000." reads: " * Game Time is Monday 0600." 5. 'Be Consistent' Amend all references in the ruleset to Rule 1036 to refer instead to the new rule. {Comment: I can't find any, but just in case} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 233 - Suspect Packages [Other, Multiple] 1. The Suspect Package [Enactment] There exists an entity called the Suspect Package. This may be shunted as though it were a Player with the name 'Suspect Package'. Any player may call the Suspect Package into a game with the action : [Dropping Package at ], where is the name of any station passed through by the player in eir move. The Suspect Package may not be dropped on Mornington Crescent, nor at any player's Home Station in that game, nor at any station currently occupied by any player in that game. If there are no suitable stations, then the [Dropping Package...] action may not be performed. There may exist no more than 3 suspect packages in any game. The Station at which a Suspect Package lies is treated as though it were blocked in that game; except if a player is performing a [Shunting...] action with eir move ending at that station, in which case it may be played as normal. Any player may play the action : [Detonating Package]. If this action is played, all Token Stacks within a 2-station radius (ie, 2 stations and less) of the Suspect Package are removed from the game, and any player within a 2-station radius of the Suspect Package must sacrifice any two tokens e owns. The Suspect Package is removed from that game. 2. Suspect Package costs [Amendment] Costs should be added to the Token Costs/Bonuses table, in a manner left to the Speaker, to the effect as follows: Performing a [Dropping Package...] | -1 Silver, -2 Bronze. action. | | Performing a [Detonating Package] | -1 Silver, -2 Bronze. action. | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 234 - Striles [Other, Multiple] 1. Basic Striles [Enactment] A Player may perform a Strile via the action [Striling to ], where is the name of a valid Strile destination. A Player may Strile between any two Stations according to the following criteria : i. The Player's LV is above 5. ii. The Station in eir Move bears an identical Token Stack to the one in eir [Striling...] Action for the purposes of that game. The Actioning Player's Location becomes the Station in the [Striling...] Action. 2. Strile Costs [Enactment] Costs should be added to the Token Costs/Bonuses table, in a manner left to the Speaker, to the effect as follows: | Performing a [Striling...] action | -3 tokens of players choice. | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
