Its very nature precludes me from describing it fully in e-mail, but it is called Self-ish Words, and to enter, all you have to do is write a word or two in a self-descriptive way. They provide several examples, described here: BIG (bigger than the rest of the text), little (smaller than other text) RED (colored red), MISPELLED, LA$ VEGA$, TRIANGLE (with a very large A with the crossbar very low so that it *is* essentially a triangle) VANISHING ACT (with the letters getting progressively smaller, and drawn with thinner lines, until the T is barely there) etc. They point out that the words must only stand for themselves; they DO NOT WANT WACKY WORDIES. For instance, "reasoning" written in a circle is not the kind of entry they are looking for. "Circular reasoning" written in a circle would be acceptable. (And they don't mention it, but just "circular" written in a circle would probably be even more appropriate.) The rules: Entries must be single words or two-word phrases, not longer. A hyphenated word containing a single hyphen is acceptable, but it counts as two words. Letters in the words may be written in different sizes, cases, colors, and fonts. They may be bent, twisted, shaded in various patterns, exaggerated, or partly deleted. Letters may resemble illustrations -- preferably simple ones that allow them to still look like letters. No other illustrations (elements that are not part of the letters themselves) may be added. Punctuation marks, numbers, and symbols found on a standard English typewriter or computer keyboard may be added or used in place of letters. Entries will be judged on cleverness, relevance, and originality (entries that are duplicated by different contestants are unlikely to fare well). Mail your entries to: Self-ish Words Contest GAMES Magazine P.O. Box 184 Fort Washington, PA 19034 You may mail more than one entry at a time, but each word or two-word phrase must appear on a separate piece of paper that also contains your name and address. Entries must be received by June 1, 1999. One grand prize of $1000 and 10 runner-up prizes of GAMES T-Shirts will be awarded. I'd love to see any Ackan win any of these prizes. /dev/joe ------------------------------ End of ackanomic Digest V4 #62 ******************************
