ackanomic Digest Wednesday, January 20 1999 Volume 04 : Issue 019 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Acka: All Good Things From: alfvaen@connect.ab.ca (Aaron V. Humphrey) Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 00:41:48 -0500 (EST) I hereby declare my intention to leave the game of Ackanomic. It has been fun, these past score or so of months, but I find my interest flagging. In the beginning, it would be unthinkable for a day to go by without my checking the web pages or the rules for something interesting, writing proposals, hunting for treasures, or the like. I clamoured for responsibility. I got it in spades later, and perhaps burnout from that contributed to my later inattention. But I don't even know for certain where the web page is, haven't updated my copy of the ruleset on my computer at least since the Great Renumbering. The diminution of my interest in Ackanomic has also given me back a whole bunch of free time that has been sorely lacking over the last two years. I'm sure I can always find something to fill it. It has, at times, been fun. But at the moment it's just more email in my mailbox. (Postmaster, you might as well leave me on the digest lists for a few days so I can see if I become an Elder or not. :-) I think that the only treasure of mine that hasn't been found is the Anti-Hubert one; any volunteers for Custodian(K 2?), let me know. The map is common knowledge anyway. I was thinking of burying my current possessions as a treasure, but frankly haven't gotten around to doing anything like that, and perhaps never will. Catch y'all on the flipside... -- --Alfvaen(Web page: http://www.connect.ab.ca/~alfvaen/ ) Current Album--Neil Finn:Try Whistling This Current Book--Thomas Hardy:Far From The Madding Crowd What happens if you get scared half to death twice? ------------------------------ From: JT Subject: Re: Acka: All Good Things Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 00:48:26 -0500 (EST) On Wed, 20 Jan 1999, Aaron V. Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 17:18:37 -0500 (EST) People of Ackanomic, I received a variety of questions from a few players. Before the questions, a recap of the Debate Rules. Candidates post their replies publically. Each reply may consist of up to 20 lines of text. These 20 lines may consists of up to 15 lines of unquoted text, and up to 10 lines of quoted text, quoted from rules, cfj, literature, the Congressional Impeachment hearing, whatever. These rules apply on a per question basis. Here are the 8 Debate Questions, in no specific order: I. Do you care about the proper use of bracket/smiley occurances? II. If you were being transformed into a dog by a magical spell or some odd side-effect of the rules, etc., and you got to choose what type of dog you would be, what type of dog would you choose to be? III. What rule do you least like and what rule do you most like from the current ruleset? IV. My question: "Prove Fermat's last theorem, without using any vowels." V. What can/should be done (if anything) to increase interest in Acka? VI. Do you intend to promote relations and cultural exchange with other nomics? If so, how? If not, what would do should another nomic declare war on Ackanomic? VII. Is this a question. VIII. Do you think that the recent repeals of vast quantities of Ackanomic's rules is a good thing, or perhaps more to the point, do you favour complexity or simplicity in the rule set? More to the point, I favor -interesting- complexity in the ruleset. Complexity for the sake of complexity serves only to undermine Ackanomic's role as the best play-by-email Nomic on the Internet. Of all the rules, I like the Paradigms rule least. I don't however dislike it enough to try and repeal it, just to vote against it and changes to it as a form of mild protest. The rule I like most is 2-3. I'm a fan of order and neatness, and being able to have a nicely ordered ruleset is a good thing. >IV. Finding ways to attract new players with new ideas so that Acka continues to grow and change. The landscape of Acka is very different now than when I joined last March. It has remained interesting to me because of the constant amount of change, even when that change has been change that I personally disliked. Streamlining and simplifying the 'minimal' rules that a player needs in order to play effectively is a good start. >VI. Do you intend to promote relations and cultural exchange with other >nomics? If so, how? If not, what would do should another nomic declare >war on Ackanomic? My personal opinion is that there isn't much to be gained from 'inter'-nomic actions or effects. Unless someone could *only* play one nomic, (ie, citizenship in real world terms) there is no real need for relations between them as players who want to be involved in both can be. As for a war declaration, I'd laugh, and then promptly ignore it because it's about the silliest thing I've heard. >VII. Is this a question. Only if this is an answer. >VIII. Do you think that the recent repeals of vast quantities of >Ackanomic's rules is a good thing, or perhaps more to the point, do you >favour complexity or simplicity in the rule set? I think that the recent repeals have in general been good. For the most part it was a clearing out of dead-wood. I favor simple rules that have interesting (and perhaps unforseen) applications, but also want enough detail/complexity in specific things to make them unique. However, I think that complexity just for the sake of complexity, or for the sake of making a player jump through hoops to achieve some 'common' game state should be avoided. --JT [-------------------------------------------------------------------------] [ Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty. ] [ It's hard to seize the day when you must first grapple with the morning ] [-------------------------------------------------------------------------] ------------------------------ From: JT Subject: Acka: End of Cycle 33 Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 23:30:37 -0500 (EST) At Wed Jan 20, 1999, 12:00:10 Acka time this afternoon, Cycle 33 ended. K 2 should post the final scores shortly :) g) Each player's score is set to zero. h) If the cycle currently ending has exceeded 30 days in length, all players who have been vacationing for the entire cycle are removed from the game as if they have quit. The cycle length exceeded 30 days. (Cycle 32 ended December 14, 1998). Euphrates is removed from Acka. (On vacation since December 7, 1998). i) If the cycle was won by points (i.e. the Winning Condition was due to Rule 8-4), then amend Rule 8-4 to change the base value of the Magic Number to the smallest prime number greater than (the current Magic Number*1.2). If the last two cycles were not won by points, then amend Rule 8-4 to change the base value of the Magic Number to the smallest prime number greater than (the current Magic Number*0.9). This cycle was won by points. The base value of the Magic Number is set to 281. j) The game cycle number is incremented, and the Magic Number is reset to its base value. Welcome to cycle 34. The Magic Number is reset to 281. k) All players who are in Gaol are released from Gaol. All players who are in the Ackanomic Afterlife are relocated to their homes. I don't believe anyone was in either place. l) If the game state is such that the single winner of the last cycle would immediately win again upon the resumption of Ackanomic play, the Chartreuse Goose is transferred to that player. This is not the case. m) All events specified by other rules to occur at the end of the cycle occur, in the numeric order of the rule that defines the event. By rule 4-4-4, JT gains 1 point of alignment. By rule 4-4-5-1, JT gains 2 honour. By rule 8-1, all players owning at least one Chartreuse Goose Card have one such card destroyed. By rule 8-2-1, the Fat Lady begins singing. By rule 8-2-4, A Commision d'Arts is called which has no effect (since one has been called in the past 60 days) n) Ackanomic play resumes. The Fat Lady has begun singing and will continue to sing until 1 day from the time of this message. --JT [-------------------------------------------------------------------------] [ Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty. ] [ It's hard to seize the day when you must first grapple with the morning ] [-------------------------------------------------------------------------] ------------------------------ End of ackanomic Digest V4 #19 ******************************
