Much as I hate to say it, the Agorans are right, at least in part. In order to create an economy of scarcity, we need something which is both scarce and genuinely valuable. The Agorans have used the ability to make and vote on proposals, which I think most Ackans consider to fundemental to give up. The chemicals set up could lead to an economy if the products were sufficiently useful, but I'm sure there are other possibilities. -- -Henry Towsner Thank heavens, the sun has gone in, and I don't have to go out and enjoy it. -Logan Pearsall Smith ------------------------------ From: Mueller Subject: Re: Acka: New Directions Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 18:24:24 -0500 (EST) At 11:34 AM 1/16/99 -0500, you wrote: >>The economy discussion on the Internomic mailing list (what's left of it) >>has been interesting to see. >>Does anyone have any interesting ideas about how to implement an economy >>of scarcity within Acka? > Much as I hate to say it, the Agorans are right, at least in part. >In order to create an economy of scarcity, we need something which is both >scarce and genuinely valuable. Now if we penalize being in debt by revoking voting rights, we have a vote economy that also has the added benefits of being tied to all the other things in the game. All other values being created by eir cost with respect to voting. Also Bah votes will finally mean something: I'm not lazy (like abstainers), but this is too boring to WASTE MONEY/VOTES on. As I think I said on the Internomic list, I don't think an economy is all that important a thing to have. Any true economy based on real scarcity would make the game more elitist as the veterans would have lots more than the newbies. This is not something I want to see. -- Tom Walmsley womble@tmbg.org http://website.lineone.net/~t.walmsley/index.html AIM: TGW666 ICQ 2925739 Bonvolu alsendi la pordiston, lausajne estas rano en mia bideo. ------------------------------ End of acka-research Digest V4 #13 **********************************
