Spring Cleaning VII
Malenkai (Randy Hall)

This is a Modest proposal.

Repeal Rule 1303, "Synod" {{[about 6 months. It seems like a lot of currency shuffling for the Financier to track, but I'm missing the actual *advantage* for an org to join the Synod, why not make your own profits?]}}

Proposal 1956 - Tue, 22 Apr 1997 03:00:12 -0500
How can you set a player to 36, anyway?
snowgod (Phil Ackley)
Decision: Rejected

I was young and foolish then, I feel old and foolish now.

{{ snowgod's score is changed to -50 . Any player with a negitive score, other than snowgod, is set to 36}}

Proposal 1957 - Tue, 22 Apr 1997 03:00:13 -0500
Give me your head, foolish man.
snowgod (Phil Ackley)
Made harfy by fnord at Wed, 23 Apr 1997 04:34:53 -0700
Decision: Rejected

I was young and foolish then, I feel old and foolish now.

Upon leaving the game, a player may have his head removed and preserved cryogenically. He may then donate his head to a player of his choosing, or announce that his head is currently unowned.

If a player leaving the game announces that his head is unowned the auction process will occur in the same manner as if the head was a recently completed gadget. A preserved head is an asset, and may be traded on the free market.

If a player does not state what is to be done with his head, it shall be assumed that it leaves the game with him.

This rules takes precedence over all rules which would deny a player the right to remove, give away, or sell his head.

Proposal 1958 - Tue, 22 Apr 1997 03:00:14 -0500
Yes Phoebe, We are more foolish than Rishonomic
snowgod (Phil Ackley)
Decision: Rejected

I was young and foolish then, I feel old and foolish now.

Ackanomic must always strive to be the silliest play by email game of nomic in existance on the internet.

If, during his journeys, the Ambassador discovers that the ruleset of another net-based nomic is substantially sillier than that of ackanomic he must issue a report stating so. This report must begin with the words "Oh, woe are we," and contain at least three specific references to mimsy entities.

Once a report has been issued, as specified by this rule the following events must occur:

1) 3 harfy proposals must be adopted.

2) The speaker must compose, and read, a silly haiku praising the Fat Lady

3) Anyone in possesion of a mimsy entity must post a message thanking the financier for his great work in service to ackanomic in general, and for his great work in the collection and inventory of entities in specific.

If all three of these conditions are not fulfilled within 14 days of the issuance of the report, then every players score shall imediatly be set to -6, with the exception of the harfmeister (whoever that may be at the end of the 14 day period) who's score shall be set to -13.

This rule specifically defers to other rules that outline events that occur upon the issuance of a report, or results of non-compliance with said events.

Proposal 1959 - Tue, 22 Apr 1997 10:34:14 -0500
Loosing your foolish head
CarsesraC (Jeroen M.W. van Dijk)
Decision: Rejected

This is a foolish proposal.

I was young and foolish then, I feel old and foolish now.

If a player doesn't own is first head it loses its right to vote.

If a player owns one head or more extra heads that are not its first head.
He gets a extra voting right for every extra head.

A player can only have one head that is his first head.
A player can have other heads that are implanted, but unless they
have not been someone first head e will get an extra voting right.

Decision: Accepted

Proposal 1961 - Tue, 22 Apr 1997 12:58:08 -0500
A Rather Mediocre Game
Guy Fawkes (Robert Shimmin)
Decision: Accepted

Create a new rule, a member of the Games & Contests Rule Suite, entitled "Mediocrity," containing the text below:

[Gist: Mediocrity is a psychological game won by guessing the "middle" number -- but not too often! I've seen variations of it in several places, none of which give any indication of who to credit for it.]

General equipment: Gamepoints as needed.

Players: minimum 3, maximum: the number of players in the game of Ackanomic at the inception of a game of Mediocrity

Referees: none

The Rules of Mediocrity:

Starting an instance of the game: Via the method described in rule 1250.1, section VI a). Also, the player announcing the beginning of an insance of Medicrity shall randomly assign each player a different integer in the range of 1 to n, where n is the number of players in the game (of Mediocrity).

Mediocrity: For a given set of numbers, the most Medicore one is determined as follows:
1) The numbers are listed in increasing order: the first member is the smallest number in the set, each succeeding member is equal to or greater than the previous one.
2) If the set has an odd number N of members, the (N+1)/2 member is near-Mediocre; if the set has an even number of members, the N/2 member is near-Mediocre.
3) If the value of the near-Mediocre member is unique in that set, it is the most Mediocre number in the set.
4) If the value of the near-Mediocre member is not unique in the set, all instances of the near-Mediocre number are removed from the set, and steps 1-3 are applied to the remaining members.
5) If no member of the set can be found to be the most Mediocre member, then the set has no most Mediocre member.

Play: play consists of rounds -- each round, one of the players shall be be Moderator. A round begins when the Moderator announces the beginning of that round; it ends when the Moderator announces the result of that round, or after six days. A round must last at least three days.

Player 1 is the Moderator at the beginning of the game; thereafter, at the end of each round, the player whose player number is the smallest player number greater than that of the current Moderator becomes Moderator. (After a round in which the player with the highest player number was Moderator, player 1 becomes Moderator again.) If the Moderator fails to announce the beginning of the next round within three days of the end of the last round, or if player 1 fails to announce the beginning of the first round within three days of the beginning of the game, the first player to name emself Moderator and announce the beginning of the next round (in the same message) is Moderator.

During a round, each player other than the Moderator sends the Moderator a positive einteger in the range of 1 to 2n, where n is the number of players other than the Moderator in the game. If any player(s) fail to do so, the Moderator shall randomly determine which integer in this range each of these players chose.

To end a round by announcing its results, the Moderator posts the following: the number selected by each player, the player (if any) who selected the most Mediocre number of those selected, and the current score of the game. (Each player's score is the number of Gamepoints e currently has for that instance of Mediocrity. All players begin the game with zero Gamepoints; a player gains one Gamepoint whenever e selects the most Mediocre number in a round.)

If a round ends because of the expiration of the six-day time limit, the Moderator is removed from the list of players (e is deemed to have quit the game). No players score any Gamepoints for that round. A player may also be removed from the player list by announcing eir resignation from either the game of Mediocrity or the game of Ackanomic, or by being removed involuntarily fromt the game of Ackanomic.

Winning the Game:
If at the end of a round, the sum of the scores of all players is greater than or equal to twice the number of players, and there exists a most Mediocre score from the set of player scores, the player with the most Mediocre score wins, and the game ends.

Trophy: the winner of the game shall receive a standard Trophy, and a rather Mediocre example of one at that. The winner is encouraged to complain (albeit it a rather nonplussed manner) about the Medicore nature of the Trophy.

Proposal 1962 - Wed, 23 Apr 1997 11:01:28 -0500
Making Use of the Gumball
Guy Fawkes (Robert Shimmin)
Decision: Rejected

Replace the first paragraph of Rule 419.2 "Ackanomic/Internomic Interface" with the following:

The Gumball is Ackanomic's Liaison to Internomic. The Ambassador (or in eir absense, the Speaker, is the Assistant to the Gumball. The Gumball, being a very busy entity, has no time to fulfill any of responsibilities of the Liaison-ship, and so it is the duty of the Assistant to the Gumball to peform all the duties of the Liaison.

-----

Add the following to the end of Rule 903:

The Gumball is registered as a non-voting player in Ackanomic. This takes precedence over Rule 250 and any other rule which would deny the Gumball non-voting player status.

Ad Hoc Towers
Niccolo Flychuck (Uri Bruck)
Decision: Accepted

A proposal that has the following effects:

I. Create a new rule entitled "Ad Hoc Comittee on the matter of Skylines" which contains the following text:
"

An Ad Hoc Committee on the matter of Skylines is empowered to approve or deny a plan for a public building submitted by a player. When a player anounces that e is submitting a plan for a Public building then that message is considered to be a call for an Ad Hoc Committee on the Matter of Skylines.

{{This rule renumbers itself to 1081}}

"

II. In R841 "Towers" Ammend section 2 to read in full: "A player is always said to be 'permitted' to build (or extend) an Ostentatious Tower associated with them. A player is said to be permitted to build (or extend) a Public Tower provided they submit a plan to an Ad Hoc Committee on the Matter of Skylines, and that Ad Hoc Commitee votes approval of that plan. Such a plan must describe a tower that could legally be built (or a legal extension of an extant Public Tower). The Public Tower so built (or extension thereof) as a result of this permission must accord with the plan approved by the Ad Hoc Committee.

Insert the following text into Rule 1250.1 "Games and Contests" immediately after section VI (b).

c) Unless the Rules for a game specify otherwise, players going on Vacation may name another player (of Ackanomic) to be their Substitute Player (in the subgame). The Substitute Player may not have been a player of the instance of the Game or Contest in which e is substituting at any time in the past, and e must agree to be a Substitute. All responsibilities and priveleges of the departed player for the Game or Contest fall to the Substitute Player [if the Substitute Player wins the subgame, the Trophy goes to em]. When the original Player returns from Vacation, e resumes playing for emself. It is considered good form for em to give the Substitute Player some recompense for eir services. Participants in Duels may not have Substitute Players for the Duel.

Is the flea always right?
Techno (Jerome Herrman)
Decision: failed to meet quorum

Techno(Jerome Herrman)

There shall be an entity known as The Titanium Tick. The Titanium Tick is very street wise, and the wisdom he imparts is not so profound or worldly as Phoebe's, and his wisdom often contradicts Phoebe's wisdom.

The tick shall be randomly found by a player of Ackanomic 3 days after the most recent finding of Phoebe. The player finding the tick must publish the ticks wisdom within 3 days of the posting of Phoebe's wisdom, but not before. If Phoebe's wisdom is not posted within the specified time that her wisdom should be posted, the finder of the tick shall recieve 5 points and not be required to post the ticks wisdom. If Phoebe's wisdom is not posted within the specified time, the tick takes this as a failure of Phoebe herself, and not the player she was supposed to impart her wisdom upon, and the tick may decide to taunt Phoebe. The player that found the tick, may post this taunting with no concern of retaliation, before the 3 days after Phoebe has been found again expire.

The tick sometimes gets hungry, and needs to eat. If at anytime the holder of the magic potato also finds the tick, the tick will eat the magic potato, thus destroying it, unless that player also holds an amber banana. If the player that has the magic potato when e finds the tick also has an amber banana, the tick will eat the amber banana instead, as he prefers them over the magic potato.

Trinket Name And Description Changes
Alfvaen
Decision: Rejected

An trinket can be renamed and have its description changed by its owner during its fluidity period(defined below). The trinket's new name must satisfy the requirements of R500.1(Entity Names), with the exception that a trinket that has previously been named cannot become nameless (though the reverse is possible). The trinket cannot be given the name of any other currently or previously existing trinket. The description may be changed to any description of a form permitted by any other rules(to which this rule defers in this manner), except that a non-empty description cannot be replaced by an empty one.

A trinket's fluidity period begins when it is created, and ends when it moves from the possession of the player which created it; for trinkets which are not created by players, their fluidity period is null.

A Kindler, Gentler *ping*
Guy Fawkes (Robert Shimmin)
Decision: Accepted

{[[ Gist: The last five Truths have suffered prematrue deaths. Let's fix this. ]}}

Replace sections IV and V of rule 1209 [The Machine That Goes *ping*] with the following text, delimited by =) symbols:

=)

IV. Beginning on the calendar day after the Scholar announces the Machine's truth, the Machine shall go *ping* exactly once on any calendar day the statement described by "today {if clause}" is at any time true. The Machine shall not otherwise go *ping*. It is the duty of the Scholar to inform the rest of Acka of this occurrence. He must do so by posting a public message with the form, "Today is Someday, the xth day of Month, in the Year of Our Lord YYYY, and the Machine That Goes *ping* Has Gone *ping* today. Since I have been scholar, the Machine has gone *ping* n times." In the actual message, Someday, xth, Month, and YYYY shall be replaced by the appropriate elements of the date of the *ping* which is being announced, and n shall be replaced by the number of times that the Machine has gone *ping* during the current Scholar's term.

V. {{[The kindler, gentler part]}}
The Scholar must announce each *ping* as described above either in the day in which it occurred or during the next two days. It is expected, however, that each *ping* be announced during the day in which occurs -- tardy (although legal) announcments are subject to reprisals as described below. Announcements of *ping*'s not made on the day in which the *ping* occurred must be prefaced by an apology from the Scholar for his tardiness. "Days" and "dates" as used in this rule are said to begin and end when the Acka Day begins and ends.

The Scholar must make exactly one announcement as described above each time the Machine goes *ping*. He may not announce that the Machine went *ping* for occasions on which it did not actually go *ping*. Although he is permitted to announce a *ping* on a day after the *ping* occurred, he is not permitted to indicate by any means, that the Machine shall go *ping* or not go *ping* on any future date, nor may he use any means whatsoever not described in the rules to communicate any information regarding the Truth to any player, so long as the undisguised Truth is not publically knowable.

=)

Replace the second paragraph of Rule 1209, section IX, with the following, delimited by ;p symbols:

;p

{{[ If no one objects to Scholar error, let it stand ]}} Should it ever be publically knowable that the current Scholar has violated any part of this rule during the current Scholar's term, or if the Scholar announces a *ping* after the day in which it occurred, any player who feels the Scholar's error or tardiness has compromised the game may post a public message calling for the Scholar's removal. Upon the posting of such a message, the Machine immediately teleports itself to the home of the Player calling for the Scholar's removal.

{{[This is *not* so that players will have some way of enforcing agreements, but rather, for example, so that they will be able to create their own sub-games or whatever. Why Do You Think I Have This Outrageous Accent?
Alfvaen (Aaron Humphrey)
Decision: Accepted

Append the following paragraphs to Rule 500.1, "Entity Names":

An alphabetic character can be "accented". If this is the case, then it has two equivalent representations, one with the non-accented alphabetic character, and one with an accented representation of the same character. The accented representation will be in accord with the HTML standard, so that, for instance, an o with an umlaut will be represented as ö . (This is the only circumstance under which a semicolon can be part of a name.) The accented representation is intended mainly for use on the Ackanomic web pages, where it will show up[in most browsers, at least]as the accented character in question. A character cannot be accented in a way that cannot be represented in the HTML standard. In any context where characters are being counted, the accented representation of a character counts as a single character.

[So, for example a character named "those pesky aliens" might have an accented representation of eir name as "thöse pésky âliens".]

Proposal 2000 - Wed, 14 May 1997 11:54:33 -0500
Never Narf Alone
Alfvaen (Aaron Humphrey)
Decision: Accepted

{{[The current rules for the Narfalone Family seem a bit silly, since you can do almost anything you want as a public member of the Family without publicly admitting your membership. This should have most of the same effect, and be a bit more in the spirit of the thing.]}}

Amend Rule 1060("Organized Crime") to add the following clause:

11. When a player joins the Narfalone Family(or if at any time a Family member does not have a Narfalone Family name)he must choose a Narfalone Family name. The Godfather must approve of any name before the player can use it. The name must be a legal Ackanomic name in all respects, and cannot conflict with any other entity name. (If, at a later time, the name is used for something else, it is the Godfather's responsibility to inform the new user of the name that it's already taken.)

From then on, any Narfalone Family business that requires a public message should be done using the player's Narfalone Family name. Otherwise, the public message is tantamount to an admission of membership, which is still a Crime. Use of the names in private Narfalone email is at the discretion of the individual players.

The title of The Godfather is considered a Narfalone Family name for the purposes of this clause.

[So if /dev/joe were to take the name Joey Narfalone for Family business, any public messages posted as Joey Narfalone would be safe from reprisal, but if /dev/joe were to acknowledge the Godfather under his own name, he'd get the law on his case.]

Also, delete the following sentences from existing clauses {{[since they are no longer needed ]}}

Clause 3: Delete the sentence "Public admittance of bein the Godfather does not entail admittance of belonging to the Narfalone Family." {{[And it should have been "admission" anyway...:-)]}}

Clause 5: Delete the sentence "This does not constitude an admittance of membership in the Narfalone Family" and the sentence "Publicly acknowledging the challenger does not entail admittance of membership in the Narfalone Family."

Clause 7: Delete the sentence "This also does not constitute an admittance of membership in the Narfalone Family."
