Duel 26 - started Fri, 01 May 1998 16:16:04 -0400

Initiator: Koxvolio
Challenged: TGW
I's Second: Slakko
C's Second:

Game chosen: YORL
Referee: Alfvaen

At Mon, 04 May 1998 08:24:42 -0400, The Gingham Wearer played temple (loose end):

It was a beautiful Winter's morning when I arrived at the temple. The first few rays of pale yellow sunlight were beginning to creep over the distant horizon and the air was filled with bird song. It was the first time for as long as I could remember that I felt truly at peace with myself. Whistling a gay little tune I was making up on the spot I strolled up to the great oak doorway and knocked.
Only a few seconds later the door was opened by a slightly plump, purple clad monk.
"Aah, you must be the new novitiate."
I nodded, "Yes."
"Do come on in," he continued, "and Brother Methuselah will show you to your room."
Brother Methuselah was a tall monk with greying hair, and he too was dressed in the traditional robes of the temple. He looked like the sort of man who would get on with anyone.
"This way," he motioned.
The monks of the Order of the Thousand Souls were so pleasant I was filled with regret at the knowledge that I was soon going to have to betray them.

Koxvolio attempted to interrupt with gate (rejected).

At Fri, 08 May 1998 17:07:34 -0400, The Gingham Wearer played big (burned)

I followed Brother Methuselah along as he led me through a maze of corridors to what was to become my room for the next few years. The monastery was so big I was sure I wouldn't be able to find my way around for quite some time, but this fear went unfounded. I arrived in my room and Brother Methuselah said he would give me a bit of time to unpack my few belongings and be back in half an hour.
I thanked the elderly monk and sat down by the desk provided. For about a minute I just sat there, thinking, and then I slowly arose and unpacked what few belongings I had with me: a photo of my girlfriend, Kate; a few clothes and a knife that my father had given me. Just the items that never leave my side.
And then I took out the short-wave radio I had been provided with, "Swallow to nest, swallow to nest. Do you read me?"
As the radio crackled into life a tear came to my eye. I hated what I needed to do, but if I didn't then the Scarlet Fist would kill Kate.

At Tue, 12 May 1998 23:28:25 -0400, The Gingham Wearer was declared asleep.

At Wed, 13 May 1998 17:02:23 -0400, Koxvolio played angel (rejected):

"This is the nest; when will you be laying our egg?"
The Lord High Inquisitor of the Scarlet Fist exulted silently at the reception of the report from the agonised Benvenuto. He had arrived at the temple and had been admitted according to plan - there would be good news to pass to the King!
"Nest; I will tell you when I have found a suitable candidate."
"I understand, little birdy. Just remember what the stakes are. Out"
The Inquisitor gloated to himself, confident that his plans were coming to fruition - it had not been easy to insinuate a pawn into the Order of the Thousand Souls, but the sovereign's orders had to be fulfilled or the price had to be paid.
Now, all the ignorant peasant philosopher needed to do was to find out who was The Angel, who had been the cause of so much trouble in the outlying provinces - once we found the leader of this little insurgency we would make an example of him. Or her, of course. And then we would see how much the peasants wanted independence from the King to express their own religious beliefs... yes - then we will see indeed...
The next time he met with the King the Inquisitor would have something to report indeed.

At Sun, 17 May 1998 13:06:11 -0400, The Gingham Wearer played gem (rejected):

The radio crackled again and I heard a voice:
"This is the nest, we read you swallow."
It was the man I had been told to refer to only as "sir", the most high commander of the scarlet fist.
"Have you located the gem yet? Over." he continued.
The gem he was referring to was the Soul of the Lord, one of the largest sapphires known to man, a holy relic to the order, and rumoured to have magical powers. I was there to steal it.
"Not yet, no. Although I have befriended one of the monks. Over."
"Very good. Keep us informed. Over and out."
I put the radio under my pillow, and only just in time. Brother Methuselah walked back in and offered to give me a tour. I politely accepted and thanked him, and then cleared my throat to ask about the gem.

At Wed, 20 May 1998 19:59:00 -0400, Koxvolio played city (loose end):

"This is the nest; when will you be laying our egg?"
Many days journey away, above the teeming life of the capital city, the Lord High Inquisitor of the Scarlet Fist exulted silently at the reception of the report from the agonised Benvenuto. He had arrived at the temple and had been admitted according to plan - there would be good news to pass to the King!
"Nest; I will tell you when I have found a suitable candidate."
"I understand, little birdy. Just remember what the stakes are. Out."
The Inquisitor stepped to the window and surveyed the crowded streets below in satisfaction; confident that his plans were coming to fruition - it had not been easy to insinuate a pawn into the Order of the Thousand Souls, but the sovereign's orders had to be fulfilled or the price had to be paid.

At Sun, 24 May 1998 07:50:25 -0400, Koxvolio played ward (burned):

When Brother Methuselah returned he found me sitting in silence, unable to decide what to do. Fortunately, I had had the presence of mind to conceal the incriminating evidence of my 'discussion' with the Inquisitor under the bed. Smiling broadly, he asked if everything was settled and gathered me up in a whirl to lead me to the great hall.
'Oh Yes', I thought in sadness, 'everything's settled'.
Barrelling through the Temple together, I noticed that there were very few people about. When I asked, Brother Methuselah merely grimaced.
Entering the Main Hallway, itself a Temple within the greater Monastery, we came to the well-known Great Seal of the Order of the Thousand Souls. Embossed in Gold, it was the most famous Ward in the world, reputed to act against the unclean of heart, and it was one of my great fears.
The Inquisition had informed me that the stories were a sham put out by the Order, but my own heart was filled with terror that the Ward would perceive what I intended - who could have a more unclean heart than I, who had come to desecrate the Temple with my treachery.
In trepidation, and lagging a few feet behind Methuselah, I stepped out onto the Seal.

At Mon, 25 May 1998 19:15:47 -0400, Koxvolio played dichotomy (burned):

As my foot settled on the Seal, I flinched in anticipation of whatever punishment was to be mine and, stumbling, found myself supported and lifted by somebody behind me.
"Careful, my son! You will have plenty of time with us to study the seal at leisure - you needn't rush to bang your head on it so soon" said a voice behind me.
Where Brother Methuselah was tall, the man who had caught me was of child-like proportions. Smiling grey eyes regarded me from an unlined face with a serious set to the mouth, above the gold-edged white robes of the Order's High Abbot. His hand on my arm was small, but the grasp was firm. He could not have been more than twenty-five years old.
My mouth went dry as I looked on the man I was to condemn - this had to be the Angel. Releasing me, he stepped forward and smiled at Methuselah. With one of them on either side of me, we walked into the Great Hall together.
As we entered, I was struck by the dichotomies surrounding me - on the one side strode the elderly Methuselah in his faded purple clothes, looming over the Abbot's shining array and outpacing his short steps. The Hall itself was dark and forbidding in its stone solidity and high ceiling, while the altar itself was modern and lit brightly, in gold and white. In many ways this place and the people I was with represented the far reaches of the history of the faith.
Little did I know how right I was, but my soul was wracked by fresh tortures as I contemplated this delicate being in the Inquisitor's dungeon.

At Sat, 30 May 1998 20:15:44 -0400, Koxvolio played partner (burned):

We set to work immediately. As a new arrival I had much to learn and the Abbot and the learned Brother Methuselah strove to impart their knowledge as fast as they could reel it out.
For that day, and for day after day that week, and then that month, we strove together to find a balance between my soul's own development and the collected knowledge of the ages.
And through this all I spied on them, and watched, and waited. It couldn't be the Abbot, because he didn't have the time to coordinate resistance around his tyrannical educational sessions, at which we would argue philosophy, discuss mathematics, and criticise the arts.
And then, one day, as I was ransacking the larder for the evening meal, he walked in to the kitchen dressed in a way quite unlike any that I have seen him before. Following Brother Methuselah, he was clad in a farmer's brown cloak, and carried a satchel on one arm. A whispered conversation ensued, after he stepped back, pulled his hat low over his head and with a quick "Bye, Meth", stepped out.
And so, it appeared that not only was the Abbot the man I had to sell to the Inquisitors, but it seemed that Methuselah, whom I loved well, and who had been with me from the beginning of the life at the Temple, was his partner in crime. And I knew very well what that meant.
I reported every two or three days to the Scarlet Fist, more to keep them happy and Kate unhurt than in the intent of actually doing anything. After the Kitchen scene however, I began to think. I had to tell them - they wanted more and more, and I knew that this wouldn't be over until the Angel had been caught. There was no way out so I did it.
And so it came that, four months and a week after I arrived, I returned from a day spent gathering firewood to see smoke pouring from the back of the Temple, and soldiers guarding the monks in a circle.

At Thu, 04 Jun 1998 20:06:36 -0400, Koxvolio played tree (burned):

My eyes filled with tears as I saw the result of my treachery, and I simply stood watching the red-clothed soldiers bully the monks into a circle. Soon enough the sergeant in charge saw me standing on the hill and sent a troop of his men up to pick me up. As they prodded me down to the valley with their rifles, I wondered, for the thousandth time, what I had done.
The Lord High Inquisitor himself was there, and quickly pulled me out of the crowd with a sickly smile. "Very well done, little birdy" he pronounced aloud, in front of my gathered 'brother' monks. "You have led us to a rich prize indeed - I must admit I had begun to have doubts about your attachment to your little lady."
Slightly outside the cowering group of monks stood the Abbott and Methuselah, held separately, and their eyes held none of the hostility that the others clearly felt for me. Instead both looked at me sadly, and Methuselah half-smiled ruefully.
"Sergeant. We will leave momenterally" snapped the Inquisitor. "It only remains to leave a lesson for any who come here afterwards. Take him, and hang him."
The head of the Scarlet Fist was pointing at Methuselah, and I couldn't help myself any longer. "No. Please, don't." - my gasp was torn from me, and received a mocking laugh in return, and a blow that felled me to my knees from one of the Scarlet guards.
In short order they hauled Methuselah, unresisting, to a tree and tied a noose around his neck. Slinging the rope over a bough, the Sergeant turned to the Inquisitor, who merely nodded. Methuselah's serene face turned red as he was hauled up into the air, and he shuddered before expiring. Many of the monks were sobbing, and a few had cried out. I was not the only one who loved 'Meth'.
The troop ignored me entirely as they gathered the others and marched off in convoy, leaving me wallowing in self-pity and misery. Methuselah was left in the tree, a sign of what was to come when the Scarlet Fist caught up with you.
I lay there for a long time, through the night, and watched the dawn the next morning before standing and following the soldiers to the city, leaving the smoking ruins and the damned tree behind me. Kate would be free by now.

Koxvolio won this Duel when Mr. Tambourine Man went on vacation.

Duel 34 - October 7, 1998

Initiator: A Mean Hat
Challenged: saaremaa
I's Second: K 2
C's Second: /dev/joe
Game Chosen: Ye Olde Rusty Lantern
Referee: JT

saaremaa was randomly selected to be the first Bard.

At Thu, 08 Oct 1998 17:37:47 -0400, saaremaa played excited (burned):

Gould stared at the yawning chasm, then looked to Myrra in disbelief. "You what?!"
"I have it", she repeated. "After what that old man told us, I pretty much figured we would end up here. I had to take the chance, and did so back when we were in Ringwood."
"Didn't you think about what he'll do to us when he figures out what happened? I don't know about you, but my vision of immortality does not include images of rotting away in his graveyard army."
"Um, duh..."
"O' silly me!", Gould exclaimed, heart now racing as he glanced back at the chasm, knowing he would soon live as a god. Quickly he raced to the mules, recklessly scattering gear and food everywhere as he tore open the saddlebags to cram what he needed into his pack.
"Calm, down! Calm down!", shouted Myrra as she dismounted, looked around, and began to unfasten a large bag from her own mount. "Calm down, gather what you need, then come over here".

At Sun, 11 Oct 1998 01:02:43 -0400, saaremaa played leather hauberk (loose end):

Gould contained his obvious excitement, gathered what he needed, and came over there. He began removing his chainmail while Myrra unfastened and opened the bag.
"I hope you know how to work that thing", he said nervously.
"Nothing to it", she said, as she pulled a hauberk from the bag and heaved over Gould. "My House has always been well versed in the old ways".
Gould examined the coat carefully as he put it on. Although made of mere leather, he knew this would offer far better protection than the mail he had just discarded. He wasn't concerned about protection, though, as his fingers examined the tiny gems inlaid in each of the leather rings. He knew this armour had never seen combat, and probably never would.
"Lets go", she said. "Come over to the ledge and face the sun."
As he did so, she began adjusting and twisting the rings of leather, carefully observing the play of light the gems made, while tightly holding onto him with her other hand. "I wish you knew how to do this", she muttered under her breath, as the play of light became less and less random.

At Sun, 11 Oct 1998 05:05:52 -0400, A Mean Hat succesfully interrupted with carefully.

At Sun, 11 Oct 1998 14:05:04 -0400, A Mean Hat played fly (burned):

Gould fidgeted as Myrra continued to fine-tune the hauberk. He could hardly contain himself. Soon, soon, all would be ready. He could already feel the beginnings of the power coursing through his veins. His whole world began to vibrate, subtly at first, and then with more force. A dull hum filled his head, getting louder and louder, and the coppery taste of blood grew stronger.
"Myrra, hurry! My wound's come open again," said Gould, as he felt, beneath the hauberk, his left side throbbing just below the bottom rib.
Myrra quickly looked around. Around the lip of the chasm, still a mile or more away, the blasted obsidian was crunching under long-dead feet. And the ground shook beneath her.
"Gould, it's him!" she hissed under her teeth. It was her turn to be frantic now, as Gould stood, rigid, as if facing an undead life of eternal servitude."
Myrra continued to twist the little leather rings, but Gould could tell she was cutting corners.
"I don't have time! They're already half-way around the mouth!"
As the rotten, shambling corpses, driven on by things fouler than they, crossed the lip of the volcano, it gave a little belch, as if their coruption was too much even for it. A little smoke came up, and the earth rumbled. Myrra stepped back to look at the whole picture, and softly, almost lovingly, an arrow from the forerunners of the undead regiment sank into her side.
"There's no time!" shrieked Myrra. "They're upon us!" She sank down.
It was true. A rain of arrows had begun, as the army of evil dead came closer. Gould lifted Myrra in his arms. "Is it completed...enough?" Myrra only looked at him. He gritted his teeth, and, clutching her tightly, leaped out over the lip, and plunged down, down, into the steaming mouth.
It was impossible to think, impossible to will it so, impossible to-- THERE!
Their descent gradually slowed, stopped, and reversed, as Gould, feeling his left side slick beneath the hauberk, and with a full mouthful of blood now, concentrated all his will on keeping the magic of the hauberk flying them upward within the cold stone walls of the volcano. And beneath them, the lava still rumbled ominously on.

At Sun, 11 Oct 1998 18:35:47 -0400, saaremaa interrupted successfully with float.

At Wed, 14 Oct 1998 01:31:15 -0400, saaremaa played electric (burned):

Upward they floated, up past the lip of the volcano, safely out of range of the volley of arrows, and into the clear blue sky of immortality. Well, it might have worked out that way had Myrra not cut corners. With freedom just out of reach, however, the hauberk started vibrating and losing focus. Slowly they drifted back into the dark pit of the volcano with Myrra frantically fidgeting with the rings.
"Can't you fix this thing!", Gould shrieked.
"Shut up", she hissed. "Can't you see I'm doing all I can to make sure we don't plummet like stones?"
Downward they drifted for what seemed like days, into the choking stench of brimstone, until they alighted on a small outcropping of rock between two seething pools of lava, deep in the pits of the volcano.
"Shhhhhh", she whispered. "He's over there. Point your finger at that stalactite."
He did so, and this time she was more careful with the hauberk. Charge pulsed within his his arm as she focused it, then BOOM! a blue bolt of lightning arc'ed from from his finger to the stalactite, cracking it free. It fell, pointy end first (of course), piercing His body as He stood unsuspecting below it.
As His body writhed, pinned to the cave floor by the massive rock, Gould and Myrra proceeded to blast what was left of Him with volleys of blue bolts from the now finely-tuned hauberk, the smell of ozone eventually overcoming the noisome stench of the brimstone.

At Thu, 15 Oct 1998 02:56:50 -0400, A Mean Hat interrupted successfully with volcano.

At Sat, 17 Oct 1998 23:11:53 -0400, A Mean Hat played books (burned):

Up, up, they flew now, Myrra's arms around Gould's neck, both of them laughing with exultation at what had been an incredibly anticlimactic victory. "Gould!" said Myrra, "We've done it!" We've freed the jungle people! We can give the stolen hauberk back to Ra's Rahul Guptha's high priest, and he will once again protect them from the wrath of Set!"
Gould grinned, rotating around in midair. "Myrra, Myrra," he said, a hint of mockery in his voice now. "Why weren't you more careful? Now that the hauberk is tuned, it will stay that way... And I have no need for you OR the jungle people. With this, I can be... a god... Why did you trust me? Why?" And with that, Gould whipped around, spread his arms wide, and shook Myrra free. He dove upwards into the impossibly blue sky as she fell, shocked beyond response, toward the blasted land around the volcano beneath.
With a sudden snap she landed, and although she was unable to feel it, she distinctly heard the snap of her spine. She lay, helpless and shattered on the broken, shattered, land. Above, the vultures circled, and Myrra could hear the movement of the undead army, unled now, shambling aimlessly toward her. Her knapsack had fallen, and ripped open, just in front of her, and, as a breeze arose, the pages of her lorebooks and spellbooks fluttered in front of her. There were spots in front of her eyes, and everything wavered in and out of focus. A vulture landed next to her, and she could feel it eyeing her hungrily. She knew she was dying. With all her effort, she focused on the books. If only one would be open to the magic of a useful spell! If only she could concentrate! The vulture pecked cautiously at her face, and blood dripped in front of her eyes. But Myrra was beyond noticing or caring. All her attention was on the tomes, their pages fluttering, carelessly, heedle! ssly, endlessly, as the throb of her lifeforce beat in a downward spiral, a descending tattoo of hopelessness.

Knight Klathyn Kylkenny reined his horse in, and let himself down, wearily and warily, to the dusty-dry ground near the volcano. "Easy, Nautha," he said to the big black stallion, before lifting his visor and heading off the road to see what was there. The vultures were feasting on something, digging at the succulent meat of some hapless animal. Klathyn had seen it before, but he hated it every time. Quite often the animals would still be alive, and Klathyn tried to put them out of their misery. But this was a bad country. A bad place to stop. Even the vultures, digging though their bloody meal, seemed on guard.
"Shoo, shoo" the big man shouted, and the birds obligingly took wing. Klathyn knelt, and looked at the little woman, lying twisted on the ground, half of her face gone, her innards pecked out all over her stomach. He looked at her face, and was horrified to see the light of life in her eyes, or what was left of them. A dry rattle sounded in her throat. She was mumbling about the jungle people and their gods. "By Solis, Satiris, and all the gods of the sky," swore Klathyn. He hoisted the woman up over his shoulder, scooped up her knapsack, and whistled for Nautha.
"Let's get you to Westcliff," he said to the delerious woman. "The monks there will be able to help you. Hya! Get going, Nautha"

At Mon, 26 Oct 1998 01:46:50 -0500, A Mean Hat played Westcliff (burned):

Westcliff. The solemn, grey-robed monks glided somberly though the damp, underground corridors of the rude monastary or knelt in the garden, digging tubers under the bleak, cloudy, sky. Myrra sat, glassy-eyed, in one of the few chairs, just outside the main entrance, and watched the horse race up the dusty path toward her. The seven months of recuperation had left her hardened, but also weaker. She got sharp pains in her head all the time, and her magical skills were nothing close to what they had been.
"Who is it, Myrra?" called Klathyn from behind, where, stripped to his trousers, the big man was chopping wood for the sacrificial fires. For no discernable reason, the knight had stayed with her through her painful recovery. He hadn't tried to touch her once, hadn't even looked at her that way, and Myrra was still uneasy around him. She knew she owed him her life, but there didn't seem to be anything he wanted from her, or any way she could help him with anything.
"I don't know," she called back. She didn't. The man's colors were strange, not from the southern kingdoms at all. He finally rounded the curve and reined in, dismounting in one liquid motion.
"Is this Westcliff?" he asked, voice musical with an accent Myrra could not recognize. "I am Miktara ad Kithan. I come searching for Klathyn Kylkenny. Is he here?" A sour-faced monk looked up from his digging, then went back to the potatoes.
Klathyn rounded the corner, and glared with undisguised anger and loathing at Miktara. The messenger looked him in the eye coldly. "The King needs you. There is an invading army from the northeast, and I was sent to retrieve you. Your pilgrimage is over."
Klathyn threw down the axe. "You know the kingdom is doomed if my quest is not completed," he roared, "and you come here saying you do the king's bidding? Have I found the 'jewel of the south' yet? How can you!?"
Myrra was fascinated. She had never seen the easy, big man approach any level of anger before.
Miktara's voice was ice. "The King calls you."
Klathyn was stone. "Then I must come." With a few words, armor, saddlebags, and horse were sent for, and Klathyn began to pack.
Miktara softened a little. "Klathyn, I'm sorry, I truly am. I know we've had our troubles before - "Klathyn's eyes flashed, and he snorted noisily. Miktara pressed on. "But the king is very sorely pressed. This Gould, or however they call him-"
Myrra leapt to her feet. "GOULD!?" she shrieked, and the hatred that crossed her small face was terrible. "Klathyn Kilkenny! I will ride with you from this place, from Westcliff. I am not untrained in the old ways. I can be of use. Let us go, we dawdle too long."
And so, a few minutes later, Westcliff was receding in the distance as the three rode away to fate. The longfaced monks watched them go until they were out of sight.

At Wed, 28 Oct 1998 05:16:29 -0500, A Mean Hat. played city (burned):

It was many days later that the small party of three finally reined in before the ruins of Mun-Tanawaka, capital city of the Kingdom of Llaquamer. They had been riding at night to avoid the skirmishing armies and the rains of magical fire, and the horses were near death with the last nights travel. Klathyn looked down into the city, and his face was blank. "Where are the towers?" he asked simply, and then cupped his face in his hands and began to sob softly. Miktara slumped in his saddle. "We are too late!" he cried. "Too late!"
Myrra looked from one to the other, then dismounted clumsily, still sore from the endless hours on horseback. "Come on, you two," she said, her voice wavering. "I know this is your home,"
"No longer, no longer," moaned Klathyn. The big man was visible shaking now. He let himself down out of his saddle wearily, and Miktara followed suit. The three began to pick their way into the smoking city.
When they finally found a living soul, three hours later, they were a sorry sight. Klathyn was beet-red with anger still, and Miktara was very pale. Myrra, trained more for adventuring and less for battle, had been retching at the smell of the carrion. They found the old man pinned under a beam, his lifesblood seeping away.
"Chaon!" shouted the two men at once. Forgetting their usual antipathy toward eachother, they quickly lifted the heavy weight off the dying man.
Chaon beckoned them closer. "They're dead, all of them... All of the royal line have perished. You two are our only hope. You two..." The old man trailed off, eyes focused, elsewhere, and then, with a little cough, expired. The two men exchanged a long, intense look. All at once, there was the sound of a trumpet, barely two streets away. "RUN!" roared Klathyn, whirling and drawing his sword as a patrol of horsemen bore down on the little group. "RUN!" His huge claymore slashed, and the first horsemen went down. In an instant Miktara was at his side, his flickering blade slashing at horse and rider as the cavalry continued to advance. Myrra was grabbed from behind by rough, strong, arms, and she shrieked her defiance until it was beaten out of her with a swift blow to the belly with the butt of a spear. The small troop of horse had just been the outrunners of what seemed to be the largest group of troops they had yet come upon. She spat blood and fell silent with a little moan. Klathyn and Miktara, still fighting viciously, were going down before the sheer weight of numbers. "Take them alive," came a high, dry, voice. Myrra looked up weakly, hatred burning from her eyes to the bejeweled man riding on elephantback behind the rest of the troop. "Gould," she said, and the vileness in the word made it choke in her throat. Then a boot exploded into her head, and she slumped, unconcious

Duel 39 - November 6, 1998

Initiator: IdiotBoy
Challenged: Studge
I's Second: Niccolo Flychuck
C's Second: A Mean Hat.
Game Chosen: Ye Olde Rusty Lantern
Referee: Alfvaen

The start of the game was announced at Sat, 07 Nov 1998 12:42:33 -0500.

At Sat, 07 Nov 1998 17:33:55 -0500, Studge played quiet (burned):

"Wise One, I cannot sleep."
"And why is that, youngling?"
"Things are too loud in my mind and too quiet on the ship."
"Then come here on my lap and I shall tell you a story."
"What kind of story, Wise One?"
"A Terrible History of an ancient war... Have you learned of the folly of the Harfonians and Agorans in your studies. Ahhh, then we shall repair your education tonite.
"The Harfonians were a joyous people, long limbed and elegant in spirit and thought. Their homeworld was a vast savanna, and their species grew to maturity amid its lush grasses and tall trees, playing music (like crickets) on the hairs which grew between their wing struts.
"The Agorans were a brutish bunch. Squat and covered with a mucus which bound, and protected their own younglings from being swept away in the swift currents of the rivers than ran along their swampy and humid world.
"Eventually each species grew to rival even the stature of our own race, youngling, and the strove among the stars like gods on fellog-driven chariots.
"The meeting of these two species would change the very arrangements of the stars, though it began as gently as a whisper between lovers, deep in the vastness of space, far from either of their homeworlds....
"Yllffiph The Proud Harpster sat in the cockpit of his new pleasure cruiser, full of pride and listening to a sweep and wave of the music produced by the 'hi-fi' system built into the ship. Outside, in the icy quietness of space a huge asteroid he was exploring from his ship suddenly began to unfold. If you had been standing on the surface of that asteroid, youngling, your very soul would have shaken with the violent grinding of machinery deep in its core. But had you floated just meters from its surface, nothing but the beautiful, stark, silent, expansion of this mass of rock would have been apparent.

At Sat, 07 Nov 1998 18:38:34 -0500, IdiotBoy interrupted with mass (successfully).

At Tue, 10 Nov 1998 17:02:58 -0500, IdiotBoy played formation (loose end):

"Yllffiph turned down the Vivaldi in the midst of Winter.. while the sounds were soothing and enjoyable to the ear, they detracted from the mission on which he had come. The Harfonian Overseers had provided him with the ultimate in personal luxury, not so much to satisfy his aesthetic sense as to distract attention from his mission.
"It was quite common in this sector to see all manner of pleasure cruisers. Many of the richest Patchian families in the Galazee spent what they quaintly called "the Summer" floating about this region in the Leering IIIs. So it was only natural for the Harfonians to outfit their most productive spy in similar summer attire.
"For that was Yllffiph's call in life, spying for the Harfonians. It offended his finely tuned ears to hear himself described as such, but once again no one seemed to appreciate his aestetic sense.
"Having now switched off the 'hi-fi' system, his hand moved naturally to the right to turn on his Monolithic Scanner. His job was to examine the new Legalistic Mountain which the Agorans were building on this rock.
"The Agorans had no use for pleasure or beauty (which was what assauged Yllffiph's conscience about his vocation.) What the Agoran's DID understand was wealth and power. And they hoped that their new Legalistic Mountain Resort would provide them vast quantities of each.
"The Legalistic Mountain was a giant pile of rock which the brutes were building by mining all of the resources of this asteroid, and piling the less valuable bits into a formation that the Agorans with their cloudy vision thought the sillier galazic neighbors would find intriguing or even beautiful. The Wizard in charge of the project was fond of describing all of the characteristics of the formation down to the smallest niggling little detail. He fancied himself quite the engineer."

At Tue, 17 Nov 1998 19:46:28 -0500, IdiotBoy passed by Default. It became Thomas Jute (formerly Studge)'s turn.
